Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures -- Part 2-15: Tests - Torque strength of coupling mechanism

This part of IEC 61300 applies an overload torque to twist-type coupling mechanisms. It is applicable to threaded or bayonet-twist type coupling mechanisms. It can be used to ensure that the coupling mechanism of a connector set or connector-device combination will withstand the torsional loads likely to be applied during normal service. Specific technical changes from the previous edition include reexamination of the pre-conditioning and rewriting of the entire composition according to the latest IEC Directives.

Overview

SIST EN 61300-2-15:2008 specifies the test method for determining the torque strength of coupling mechanisms used in fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. This European standard applies to twist-type coupling mechanisms, including both threaded and bayonet-twist designs, commonly found in fiber optic connectors. The goal is to ensure the mechanical integrity of coupling mechanisms when subjected to torsional loads during normal operation and to verify that these components maintain performance and reliability.

This test standard updates previous editions by reexamining pre-conditioning methods and aligning content with the latest International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) directives. By following the procedures defined in this standard, manufacturers, testers, and quality assurance professionals in the fiber optic industry can verify that connectors withstand realistic mechanical stress, enhancing the durability and safety of optical communication infrastructures.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application:
Applies to twist-type coupling mechanisms, such as threaded or bayonet designs in fibre optic connectors.

  • Test Procedure:
Overload torque is applied to a mated connector set or connector-device combination. The torque is delivered through specialized test apparatus that ensures proper alignment and avoids additional mechanical stresses.

  • Apparatus:
    The test setup typically includes:

    • A stable stand for mounting the test specimen
    • A specimen holder to prevent rotation while allowing slight movement for alignment
    • A coupling and coupling shaft to apply the torque orthogonally
    • Torque applicator and gauge with at least 10% accuracy
  • Specimen Preparation:
Devices are mated as per manufacturer instructions, then pre-conditioned in standard test conditions as per IEC 61300-1.

  • Assessment Criteria:
After torque application, specimens are visually examined for signs of damage, cracking, deformation, or any other issues that could impair performance.

  • Severity Levels:
The standard defines preferred overload torques (e.g., 0.4 Nm, 0.6 Nm, 0.8 Nm), though specific values should be determined per application.

Applications

  • Connector Manufacturing:
Ensures that fibre optic connectors, adapters, and related components are robust against twisting forces incurred during installation and routine use.

  • Quality Assurance & Testing:
Used by quality control departments to validate mechanical resilience before products are released or incorporated into communication systems.

  • Telecommunications & Data Centers:
Supports reliability in high-density fiber optic networks by minimizing the risk of connection failure caused by mechanical stress.

  • Standardization Compliance:
Enables organizations to demonstrate compliance with international and European quality requirements, boosting market acceptability.

Related Standards

  • IEC 61300-3-1:
Provides procedures for visual examination of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components to detect physical defects after mechanical testing.

  • IEC 61300 Series (General):
Comprehensive set of standards covering basic test and measurement procedures for fibre optic components, including environmental, mechanical, and end-use performance tests.

  • EN 61300-2-15 (European Adoption):
SIST EN 61300-2-15:2008 is the Slovenian adoption of the European standard, identical to IEC 61300-2-15:2008, ensuring harmonized testing methodologies across the EU.

By adhering to SIST EN 61300-2-15:2008, manufacturers and users can ensure the durability and dependability of fibre optic connector coupling mechanisms, essential for maintaining robust, high-performance optical communication networks.

all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
