Aerospace series - Circuit breakers, single-pole, temperature compensated, rated current 1 A to 25 A - Part 004: With signal contact - Product standard

This standard specifies the characteristics of single-pole circuit breakers, temperature compensated with a rated current from 1 A to 25 A, used in aircraft on-board circuits at a temperature between – 55 °C and 125 °C and at an altitude of 22 000 m max.
These circuit breakers are operated by a push-pull type single push button (actuator), with delayed action "trip-free" tripping with a signal contact which is open when main contacts are closed, and inversely.
They will continue to function up to the short-circuit current.

Overview

SIST EN 2995-004:2009 is a European standard that specifies requirements for single-pole, temperature compensated circuit breakers with rated currents from 1 A to 25 A, specifically designed for aerospace applications. These circuit breakers are intended for use in aircraft on-board electrical circuits, operating in harsh environments with temperatures ranging from –55 °C to 125 °C and altitudes up to 22,000 meters. A distinguishing feature of these circuit breakers is the inclusion of a signal contact that monitors the status of the primary contacts, enhancing circuit monitoring and safety in demanding aerospace environments.

Key Topics

  • Single-pole, temperature compensated design: Provides consistent circuit protection across a broad temperature range, maintaining reliability at extreme altitudes and temperatures common in aerospace applications.
  • Push-pull actuator with trip-free mechanism: The manual actuator features a delayed action "trip-free" design, ensuring the breaker can trip independently of actuator manipulation, even under overload conditions.
  • Signal contact integration: Signal contact is open when the main contacts are closed, and vice versa, facilitating advanced circuit status monitoring.
  • Voltage ratings: Supports typical aerospace voltages, including 28 V DC and up to 115 V AC (360 Hz to 800 Hz), suitable for a wide range of aircraft electrical systems.
  • Mechanical and environmental endurance: Designed for high resistance to vibration (up to 10 gn), shock (up to 50 gn), humidity, corrosion, and exposure to contaminating liquids, as referenced in associated standards.
  • Standardized mounting and marking: Ensures ease of installation, identification, and compatibility with common aerospace hardware and marking protocols.

Applications

SIST EN 2995-004:2009 circuit breakers are crucial components in the following aerospace and high-reliability fields:

  • Aircraft electrical systems: Used in critical on-board circuits where robust, reliable circuit protection is essential for safety and equipment longevity.
  • Avionics and control panels: Trusted in control and instrumentation systems requiring signal feedback for main and auxiliary circuit status.
  • Environmental extremes: Suitable for platforms exposed to severe cold, heat, and reduced atmospheric pressure, such as commercial jets, military aircraft, and specialized aerospace vehicles.
  • Maintenance and diagnostics: The integrated signal contact enables efficient system monitoring and troubleshooting, simplifying fault detection and maintenance operations.
  • Standardized fleets: Ensures interoperability and consistent performance in multinational fleets and collaborative aerospace programs through standardized dimensions, ratings, and performance criteria.

Related Standards

For broader compatibility and compliance, the following related aerospace standards should be referenced alongside SIST EN 2995-004:2009:

  • EN 2995-001: General technical specifications for single-pole, temperature compensated circuit breakers (foundation document for series).
  • EN 3155-016: Electrical contacts used in aerospace connectors, specifying pin configurations relevant to circuit breaker installations.
  • EN 6113: Connecting and attachment hardware for aerospace circuit breakers, ensuring standardized fasteners and mounting solutions.
  • TR 6083: Installation requirements for electrical components in aerospace contexts.
  • MIL-I-81969/1A & MIL-I-81969/14C: Tools for installing and removing electrical contacts in aerospace connector assemblies.
  • FED-STD-595B: Color standards for marking and procurement in aerospace applications.

By adhering to SIST EN 2995-004:2009, aerospace engineers, manufacturers, and maintenance providers ensure high levels of safety, reliability, and consistency in circuit protection within the rigorous operational environment of modern aircraft. This standard supports compliance, reduces risk, and facilitates seamless equipment integration across global aerospace systems.
