Overview

SIST EN 60068-2-78:2013 is a European standard that specifies a testing method for assessing the ability of equipment, components, and materials to withstand environments characterized by high humidity at a constant temperature without condensation. Developed in alignment with IEC 60068-2-78:2012, this standard is essential for evaluating the durability and reliability of products during transportation, storage, and operational use where damp heat may be a critical factor.

By simulating steady-state damp heat conditions in a controlled laboratory environment, this standard helps manufacturers and product designers identify potential weaknesses in design, material selection, or assembly that could result in failures due to moisture ingress or absorption.

Key Topics

  • Test Methodology
The standard outlines detailed procedures using temperature and humidity-controlled chambers to expose specimens to defined levels of constant heat and humidity.

  • Test Chambers
Equipment requirements for temperature and humidity chambers are specified, referencing IEC 60068-3-6 for confirmation of performance and setup instructions.

  • Severity Levels
The test’s severity is determined by combinations of temperature and relative humidity (such as 30°C or 40°C at 85-93% RH) and by the exposure duration, allowing flexibility based on the relevant application or specification.

  • Specimen Preparation
Instructions are provided for the pre-conditioning, mounting, and handling of test specimens, including measures to prevent condensation and ensure accurate results.

  • Measurement and Reporting
The standard details the initial, intermediate, and final observation and measurement requirements, as well as the essential information that must be included in the test report to ensure traceability and reproducibility.

Applications

SIST EN 60068-2-78:2013 is widely used in the following sectors:

  • Electronics and Electrical Equipment: Testing circuit boards, sensors, and devices for resistance to moisture-related degradation or malfunction.
  • Automotive and Transport: Ensuring components can perform reliably in varying global climates, particularly within passenger compartments or engine environments prone to high humidity.
  • Industrial and Process Control: Verifying the robustness of instruments and control systems deployed in humid factories, plants, or coastal regions.
  • Telecommunications: Assessing the durability of hardware installed in outdoor cabinets or remote locations exposed to challenging environmental conditions.
  • Consumer Goods and Appliances: Ensuring products such as household appliances meet safety and longevity requirements throughout shipping, storage, and use.

By adhering to this standard, manufacturers can reduce warranty claims, prevent field failures, and demonstrate compliance with market and regulatory requirements for environmental durability.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive approach to environmental testing and product reliability, consider these related standards:

  • IEC 60068-1 – Environmental testing - General and guidance: Provides the overall framework and definitions for environmental testing.
  • IEC 60068-3-6 – Supporting documentation and guidance for temperature/humidity chambers: Covers requirements and procedures for confirming and documenting chamber performance.
  • IEC Guide 104 – Preparation and use of safety publications: Provides additional safety-related guidance relevant for product testing and standards development.

Adopting SIST EN 60068-2-78:2013 as part of your environmental testing programme can help ensure consistent product quality, compliance with international standards, and enhanced market acceptance in sectors where humidity resistance is critical.

FOREWORD 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user. 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter. 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any services carried out by independent certification bodies. 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication. 7) No liability shall attach to IEC o
