Overview
SIST EN 12778:2003 - Cookware: Pressure Cookers for Domestic Use is a Slovenian adoption of the European standard EN 12778:2002. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this standard establishes definitions, manufacturing, safety, and functional requirements for pressure cookers intended for use in household kitchens. It applies specifically to portable domestic pressure cookers with a gross volume of up to 25 liters, operating at working pressures between 4 kPa and 150 kPa, regardless of whether they use integrated or independent heating.
This standard ensures that pressure cookers are safe, reliable, and function correctly when used in domestic environments, addressing concerns around pressure control, handling, labeling, and user instructions.
Key Topics
Terminology and Definitions
The standard clearly defines key terms such as pressure control device, safety device, decompression device, integrated and independent heating, capacity, and usable volume, ensuring a common understanding for manufacturers, suppliers, and users.Manufacturing Requirements
- Materials must offer mechanical strength, resistance to chemical exposure, and must not impact food safety or taste.
- Construction must avoid sharp edges, surface defects, and should ensure easy cleaning and maintenance without special tools.
- Design of lids, handles, and all devices should guarantee stability, safe operation, and user protection.
Safety and Functional Requirements
- Pressure cookers must include dedicated pressure control and safety devices, a pressure indicator, a decompression device, and a safe opening system.
- Devices must operate reliably within stated pressure limits, prevent accidental opening under pressure, and ensure that steam and hot surfaces cannot cause injury.
- Lifting grips and handles must remain safe to touch under use, and their design must prioritize ergonomic, secure handling.
Testing and Compliance
SIST EN 12778:2003 describes detailed testing for physical components, safety devices, pressure resistance, usability of handles, and effectiveness of safety systems. All pressure cookers must be clearly marked and accompanied by labeling and user instructions outlining necessary safety information and operating guidelines.
Applications
