Overview
SIST EN IEC 61643-01:2025/A11:2025 specifies general requirements and test methods for low-voltage surge protective devices (SPDs). Issued by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard aligns with the European Standard EN IEC 61643-01:2025/A11:2025 and is developed by CENELEC Technical Committee CLC/TC 37A. It serves as an amendment to the core standard, introducing modifications and additional guidelines for the design, performance, and testing of SPDs used for protecting low-voltage electrical installations and equipment from surge transients.
Key Topics
- General Requirements: The document outlines core requirements for surge protective devices intended for low-voltage electrical networks, including structural, environmental, and safety criteria.
- Test Methods: It specifies standardized procedures for testing SPDs to verify their performance and safety. This includes routine production tests as well as advanced mechanical, thermal, and environmental assessments.
- Vibration and Shock Resistance: Annex ZB introduces guidelines for testing SPDs against vibration and shock, relevant to both transportation and specific application environments.
- Technical References: The standard provides updated normative references, ensuring that SPDs align with current practices and safety directives in Europe.
- Conformity with EU Directives: It supports requirements for conformity with Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive), facilitating presumption of conformity for manufacturers within the scope of European legislation.
Applications
Low-voltage SPDs designed to meet the requirements of SIST EN IEC 61643-01:2025/A11:2025 play a critical role in:
- Building Installations: Ensuring protection for power distribution boards, consumer units, and sensitive electronic equipment in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
- Substations and Switchgear: Preventing damage due to transient overvoltages, such as those caused by lightning or switching operations, in substations and electrical cabinets.
- Transportation and Special Environments: Meeting additional test protocols for vibration and shock in railways, industrial automation settings, or other applications subject to mechanical stress.
- Compliance and Product Certification: Providing manufacturers with clear criteria for type testing, quality assurance, and CE marking, supporting streamlined access to the European market.
Related Standards
SIST EN IEC 61643-01:2025/A11:2025 references several international and European standards to ensure a comprehensive and harmonized approach, including:
- IEC 60364-5-53 / EN 60364-5-53: Selection and installation of protective electrical equipment.
- IEC 60068 series: Environmental testing, including vibration and shock (EN 60068-2-6, EN 60068-2-64, EN 60068-2-27) and other conditioning tests.
- IEC 60269 series: Requirements for low-voltage fuses and related overcurrent protection.
- IEC 60529 (IP Code): Enclosure protection ratings.
- IEC/EN 61000 series: Electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
- EN 61373: Railway applications - shock and vibration tests.
- IEC/TR 61643-03: SPD testing guidance.
These references ensure that SPDs designed and tested according to SIST EN IEC 61643-01:2025/A11:2025 meet the latest industry requirements for reliability, environmental resilience, and normative compliance.
Practical Value
Implementing this standard ensures that low-voltage surge protective devices offer robust and reliable protection, contribute to operational safety, and maintain compliance with both technical regulations and European legislation. Adherence benefits manufacturers, installers, and end-users by reducing the risk of damage, downtime, or safety hazards due to electrical surges.

Vibration and shock test
ZB.1 Introduction
This annex gives information if the manufacturer declares performances for vibration and shock conditions.
ZB.2 Vibration and shock test
Vibration and shock tests shall be performed according to
— EN 60068-2-6 for sinusoidal Vibration test,
— EN 60068-2-64 for broadband random Vibration test, and
— EN 60068-2-27 for shock test.
Usually SPD are subject to mechanical stress due to transportation. This should be checked by a vibration and
shock test with the parameters given in EN 60721-3-2.
Special application of SPDs may require additional vibration and shock tests.
The typical values can be as shown in Table ZB.1.
