SIST EN 12893:2002
(Main)Copper and copper alloys - Determination of spiral elongation number
Copper and copper alloys - Determination of spiral elongation number
This European Standard specifies a method for performing the spiral elongation test on high purity copper drawing stock conforming to EN 1977, grade Cu-ETP1 (CW003A). The method has been designed for testing high purity copper sampled at the drawing stock stage. It is not relevant for assessing the quality of copper wire selected at a later stage of processing.

Overview
SIST EN 12893:2002 is a European standard that defines the method for determining the spiral elongation number of copper and copper alloys. Specifically, this standard applies to high purity copper drawing stock that meets EN 1977 requirements for grade Cu-ETP1 (CW003A). The spiral elongation test described in SIST EN 12893:2002 is essential for evaluating the mechanical properties of copper at the drawing stock stage, ensuring the material's suitability for subsequent processing.
This standard, published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), plays a vital role in quality control within the copper industry. It helps manufacturers maintain consistent product performance and supports compliance with international quality benchmarks.
Key Topics
Scope of Application
The spiral elongation test is strictly intended for high purity copper drawing stock at the pre-processing stage. It is not applicable to drawn copper wire or copper products that are already processed further.Test Method
SIST EN 12893:2002 describes the procedure for performing the spiral elongation test, including:- Preparation of test samples from qualified copper drawing stock.
- Execution of the spiral elongation measurement as specified by the standard.
- Evaluation criteria based on elongation results.
Material Focus
The standard is focused on copper grade Cu-ETP1 (CW003A), as specified in EN 1977.Quality Assurance
Implementation of this standard ensures reliable assessment of copper’s mechanical properties at a critical processing stage, contributing to overall product quality.
Applications
SIST EN 12893:2002 is particularly valuable for organizations involved in the manufacture and processing of copper drawing stock. Typical applications include:
Metallurgical Quality Control
Ensures batch consistency and compliance by verifying that drawing stock meets mechanical property standards before further processing.Copper Product Manufacturing
Supports the production of high-quality copper wires, cables, and other products by establishing reliable material performance standards at the drawing stock stage.Industry Sectors
- Electrical and electronics manufacturing
- Cable and wire production
- Architectural and industrial copper applications
Laboratory Testing
Provides a standardized test method for laboratories conducting mechanical testing of copper materials.
By applying this standard, companies can enhance their product reliability, meet customer demands for quality, and compete effectively in both domestic and international markets.
Related Standards
Organizations adhering to SIST EN 12893:2002 should also be familiar with several related standards to ensure comprehensive quality management:
- EN 1977: Copper cathodes - Defines the properties and requirements for copper grade Cu-ETP1 used as the starting material.
- EN 13601: Copper and copper alloys - Requirements for copper rod, bar, and wire for general electrical purposes.
- EN 1978: Copper and copper alloys - Copper cathodes - Chemical composition and other requirements.
By referencing and implementing SIST EN 12893:2002 alongside these related standards, companies can achieve higher standards of product integrity and performance throughout the copper manufacturing process.
