Overview
oSIST prEN 17732:2026 - Soil Improvers and Growing Media - Terminology is a proposed European Standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), under the coordination of CEN/TC 223. The standard establishes a comprehensive and harmonized vocabulary for soil improvers and growing media, ensuring clarity and consistency throughout the industry. The terminology applies to all aspects of soil improvement and plant cultivation substrates, including product types, material components, processing methods, sampling, properties, and safety aspects. This document replaces CEN/TS 17732:2022, introducing updated definitions and removing redundant information.
Annex A provides an informative, alphabetical index of all terms defined, making it a valuable reference tool for industry professionals, regulators, manufacturers, and users committed to the effective communication and compliance in the sector.
Key Topics
- Standardized Terms for Soil Improvers and Growing Media: Definitions for materials and products such as compost, biochar, peat, coir, digestate, and various components used in plant substrates.
- Processing and Manufacture: Terminology covering processes like composting, anaerobic digestion, fiberization, drying, and milling relevant to soil improvers and growing media.
- Sampling and Testing: Key terms relating to the correct sampling methods and sample types, supporting reliable analysis and quality control protocols.
- Physical, Chemical, and Biological Properties: Definitions covering properties such as bulk density, particle size, bioavailability, stability, electrical conductivity, and presence of specific pathogens or contaminants.
- Safety and Labeling: Terms defining risk, hazard, harm, contaminants, labeling requirements, and misuse to support regulatory compliance and product safety.
Applications
The terminology and definitions specified in oSIST prEN 17732:2026 are vital for:
- Manufacturers and Processors: Ensuring clear communication of product content, characteristics, and intended uses for soil improvers and growing media, in line with EU regulations.
- Regulators and Inspectors: Supporting harmonized implementation of EU laws concerning fertilizers and growing media, such as Regulation (EU) 2019/1009.
- Laboratories and Researchers: Providing consistency in sample collection, analysis, and reporting of product properties and safety aspects.
- Trade and Distribution: Facilitating transparent labelling and information exchange between suppliers, distributors, and end-users across national and linguistic boundaries.
- End-users (Professional and Amateur): Helping users to understand product labels, select suitable products, and apply them responsibly in agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, and gardening.
By offering a common language for all stakeholders, the standard promotes safety, quality, and environmental sustainability in the handling and use of soil improvers and growing media.
