Pasivne radiofrekvenčne (rf) in mikrovalovne naprave, meritve intermodulacijskega nivoja - 4. del: Meritve pasivne intermodulacije v koaksialnih kablih (IEC 62037-4:2012)
Ta del standarda IEC 62037 določa preskusne vpenjalne naprave in postopke, ki so priporočljivi za merjenje ravni pasivne intermodulacije, ki jo proizvedejo koaksialni kabli. Opredeljene so dve dinamični preskusni metodi in ena statična preskusna metoda. Za vse koaksialne kable se opravi statični in dinamični preskus s pripeto kabelsko zanko. Pri kablih, ki so uvrščeni med prožne ali polprožne kable, se poleg tega opravi tudi dinamični preskus prožnosti.

Overview
SIST EN 62037-4:2012 specifies the requirements for the measurement of passive intermodulation (PIM) in coaxial cables used in radio frequency (r.f.) and microwave systems. Part of the IEC 62037 series, this standard details the test fixtures and comprehensive procedures to support consistent and reliable intermodulation level measurements. The standard covers both dynamic tests - including clamped cable loop and flexing tool methods - and a static test method, ensuring assessment under realistic operational conditions.
Effective PIM measurement in coaxial cables is essential for applications where low intermodulation distortion is critical, such as wireless communication systems, broadcasting infrastructure, and microwave transmission. The methodologies described in SIST EN 62037-4:2012 help manufacturers and operators ensure that coaxial cables meet stringent performance requirements, supporting high system integrity and minimal signal interference.
Key Topics
- Dynamic Test Methods:
- Clamped Cable Loop Test: Simulates mechanical flexing and movement, assessing PIM performance when cables are bent or manipulated in multiple planes.
- Flexing Tool Test: Evaluates the impact of repeated bending on flexible and semi-flexible cables, mimicking in-use flexure over a defined test length.
- Static Test Method:
- Measures PIM in cables at rest, establishing a base value for comparison with dynamic results, important for stiffer or less flexible types.
- Test Fixture Requirements:
- Defines the design and setup of clamping and flexing fixtures to ensure repeatable and non-destructive measurement conditions.
- Emphasizes the use of connectors and terminations with known low-intermodulation characteristics to isolate the performance of the cable itself.
- Applicability:
- Applies to all coaxial cables, with special provisions for evaluating flexible and semi-flexible types more common in jumper and patch applications.
- Normative References:
- Ensures compatibility and consistency with related standards in the IEC 62037 series, such as measurement methods and connector assessments.
Applications
SIST EN 62037-4:2012 is relevant wherever coaxial cables play a vital role in r.f. and microwave signal transmission. Key application areas include:
- Wireless and Cellular Networks:
Ensures low PIM in feeder and jumper cables, supporting high-capacity, low-interference transmission for mobile base stations and distributed antenna systems. - Broadcast and Communications Infrastructure:
Essential for maintaining signal quality and minimizing broadcast harmonics in television and radio transmission lines. - Microwave and Satellite Communications:
Supports reliable data transfer in high-frequency microwave links used for backhaul, satellite uplinks, and downlinks. - Test and Measurement Environments:
Used in lab and field settings for the qualification and acceptance testing of cable assemblies. - RF System Manufacturing:
Offers guidance for cable designs intended for stringent low-PIM requirements, enabling better product performance and reliability.
Related Standards
SIST EN 62037-4:2012 is part of a broader family of standards addressing passive intermodulation concerns in r.f. and microwave devices. Key related standards include:
- IEC 62037-1:
General requirements and measurement methods for the determination of passive intermodulation in r.f. and microwave devices. - IEC 62037-3:
Specific procedures for measuring passive intermodulation in coaxial connectors.
These standards work collectively to support manufacturers, integrators, and operators in safeguarding system performance in high-frequency transmission environments. By adhering to the processes outlined in SIST EN 62037-4:2012, organizations can confidently achieve and verify low passive intermodulation in coaxial cable installations, ensuring robust and interference-free communications.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
