Overview

SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 (ISO 105-P02:2002) defines a standardized method for determining the colour fastness of all types of textiles to the action of steam pleating. Colour fastness to pleating is a critical property for textiles that undergo finishing processes that impart durable creases or pleats using steam. This standard describes and specifies three different test procedures, each with varying levels of severity, to assess how well the colour of a textile resists alteration and staining from adjacent fabrics during steam pleating.

Key keywords: colour fastness, pleating, steam pleating, textile testing, ISO 105-P02, textile standards, colour resistance, textile quality, textile finishing.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application

    • Assess the resistance of textile colours to steam pleating across fabrics, yarns, and fibers.
    • Relevant for textiles in any form or composition, including blends of synthetic and natural fibers.
  • Test Methodologies

    • Three distinct test severities (mild, intermediate, severe) to match the end-use requirements and expected finishing conditions.
    • Use of a specimen holder and controlled steaming apparatus to simulate pleating conditions without actual mechanical pleating.
    • Evaluation of both the alteration in the test specimen’s colour and potential staining of adjacent fabrics.
  • Assessment Tools

    • Change in colour and staining measured and rated using internationally recognized grey scales.
    • Standardized conditioning and drying procedures for specimen evaluation, ensuring consistent results.
  • Reporting Requirements

    • Full documentation of test conditions, specimen details, ratings for colour change and staining, and identification of adjacent fabrics used.

Applications

The ISO 105-P02:2002 standard is highly relevant for:

  • Textile Manufacturers: Ensures products maintain visual quality after steam pleating, helping minimize customer complaints related to colour change or staining.
  • Textile Finishers: Offers guidance on evaluating materials before large-scale steam pleating processes, reducing the risk of production losses.
  • Quality Control Laboratories: Provides a repeatable method for verifying the colour fastness of various textiles under steam exposure.
  • R&D in Textile Industry: Assists in developing new fabrics or finishes with improved resistance to colour alteration due to heat and moisture.
  • Importers and Exporters: Facilitates international trade by complying with recognized standards demanded by global supply chains.

Textile products that often undergo steam pleating include garments, home textiles (curtains, draperies), technical textiles, and decorative fabrics.

Related Standards

  • ISO 105-A01: General principles of testing for colour fastness (fundamental testing procedures).
  • ISO 105-A02 & ISO 105-A03: Methods for assessing change in colour and staining using grey scales.
  • ISO 105-F10: Specification for adjacent multifiber fabrics used in colour fastness tests.
  • ISO 139: Standards for conditioning and testing of textiles under controlled atmospheric parameters.

These related standards support the implementation of ISO 105-P02:2002 and help ensure consistency and comparability across various textile tests and applications.

Implementing SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 is a valuable step for any organization focused on textile quality assurance, product consistency, and international compliance in textile testing for colour fastness to steam pleating.

ISO 105-P02:2002(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted
by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 105 may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 105-P02 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, Subcommittee SC 1, Tests for coloured
textiles and colorants.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 105-P02:1993), of which it constitutes a minor
revision.
ISO 105 was previously published in thirteen “parts”, each designated by a letter (e.g. “Part A”), with publication
dates between 1978 and 1985. Each part contained a series of “sections”, each designated by the respective part
letter and by a two-digit serial number (e.g. “Section A01”). These sections are now being republished as separate
documents, themselves designated “parts” but retaining their earlier alphanumeric designations. A complete list of
these parts is given in ISO 105-A01.

Colour fastness to pleating: Steam pleating
1 Scope
1.1 This part of ISO 105 specifies a method for determining the resistance of the colour of textiles of all kinds
and in all forms to the action of steam-pleating processes. The materials are not pleated during the test, and it is
emphasized that the test is not intended for assessing the quality of the pleating process.
1.2 Three tests differing in severity are provided; one or more of them may be used depending on the
requirements.
