Overview

oSIST prEN IEC 60794-1-135:2025 defines basic mechanical test methods for optical fibre cables, specifically focusing on the sheave test (Method E35). Developed by SIST and aligned with international IEC standards, this document is part of the IEC 60794 series for optical fibre cable testing. The sheave test assesses the ability of aerial optical fibre cables, such as Optical Ground Wire (OPGW), Optical Phase Conductor (OPPC), Optical Aerial Cable (OPAC), and All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) cables, to withstand bending stress during installation, especially when routed over sheaves or pulleys.

This standard is essential for ensuring the mechanical reliability, integrity, and long-term performance of optical fibre cables in real-world telecommunication infrastructure deployments.

Key Topics

  • Sheave Test (Method E35): Establishes procedures to evaluate cable durability during installation by simulating bending over one or multiple sheaves (rollers or pulleys).
  • Sample Preparation: Guidelines for selecting and marking cable samples, with consideration for lay lengths and preparation for mechanical loading.
  • Test Apparatus and Conditions: Specifies the required test equipment (including sheave geometry and tension devices) and adherence to standard atmospheric conditions.
  • Test Procedures:
    • Procedure 1 (Single Sheave): Bending cable over a single sheave to a prescribed angle, simulating installation over a pulley.
    • Procedure 2 (Three Sheaves): S-Z bend test using three aligned sheaves to reflect more complex installation scenarios.
  • Measurements and Criteria:
    • Visual inspection for physical damage
    • Changes in optical attenuation and fibre elongation
    • Cable ovality (deviation from roundness) after cycling
    • Reporting requirements for deviations, performance, and physical integrity
  • Acceptance Criteria: Pass/fail criteria based on attenuation, ovality, fibre strain, and absence of observable damage.

Applications

The sheave test method is a vital tool for cable manufacturers, installers, and telecommunication network operators. Key applications include:

  • Product Qualification: Certifies that fibre optic cables can endure the mechanical stresses expected during installation, especially in aerial deployments.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensures consistency in cable performance, helping manufacturers demonstrate compliance with international standards.
  • Network Reliability: Reduces the risk of cable failure or performance degradation due to installation-related bending, supporting robust network operations.
  • Tender Specification and Procurement: Enables end-users and contractors to specify tested and certified cable types for procurement, ensuring they meet mechanical durability requirements.
  • Research and Development: Supports innovation in cable design by providing a standardized test protocol for new materials or structures.

Related Standards

Several standards are referenced in oSIST prEN IEC 60794-1-135:2025, contributing to a comprehensive framework for optical fibre cable testing:

  • IEC 60794-1-1: General definitions and specifications for optical fibre cables.
  • IEC 60794-1-2: Guidance on test procedures and general requirements for optical cable testing.
  • IEC 60793-1-22: Test methods for measuring fibre length.
  • IEC 60793-1-46: Methods for monitoring changes in optical attenuation.

Method E35 replaces certain elements of previous editions (e.g., Method E18B of IEC 60794-1-21) and is now a stand-alone document within the 60794-1-1xx series, underlining its industry relevance.

28 FOREWORD
29 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
30 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
31 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
32 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
33 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
34 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
35 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
36 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
37 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
38 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
39 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
40 interested IEC National Committees.
41 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
42 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
43 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
44 misinterpretation by any end user.
45 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
46 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
47 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
48 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
49 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
50 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
51 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
52 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
53 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
54 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
55 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
56 Publications.
57 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
58 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
59 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
60 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
61 IEC 60794-1-135 has been prepared by subcommittee 86A: Fibres and cables, of IEC technical
62 committee 86: Fibre optics. It is an International Standard.
63 This first edition cancels and replaces Method E18B of the second edition of IEC 60794-1-21
64 published in 2020. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
65 This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous
66 edition:
67 a) the mechanical test contained in IEC 60794-1-21: 2015+AMD1:2020 will now be individually
68 numbered in the IEC 60794-1-1xx series. Each test method is now considered to be an
69 individual document rather than part of a multi-test method compendium.
70 b) expand applicable scope, add OPPC and ADSS.
71 c) add the methods and standards of optical testing.
72 d) add the measurement and requirement of maximum allowable ovality.
73 e) add chapter “4.7 Details to be reported”.
74 The text of this International Standard is based on the following documents:
