Overview
SIST EN 1349:2011 is the European standard dedicated to industrial process control valves, providing comprehensive requirements for design, performance, materials, ratings, dimensions, testing, and marking. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard ensures that control valves used in industrial processes meet consistent quality, safety, and interoperability benchmarks across Europe. SIST EN 1349:2011 covers a wide range of nominal sizes (DN 10–DN 1200), pressure ratings (PN 10–PN 400), and classes (Class 150–Class 4500), but specifically excludes pinch valves and cast iron class-designated flanges.
By specifying rigorous criteria for control valves, SIST EN 1349:2011 helps manufacturers, system designers, and operators to achieve reliable performance and regulatory compliance in automation and process control applications.
Key Topics
SIST EN 1349:2011 addresses several critical areas for industrial process control valves:
- Design Requirements: Outlines accepted materials, general construction, and compatibility with the intended application.
- Pressure and Temperature Ratings: Specifies compliance with European Standards for various materials, ensuring operational safety.
- Dimensions: Provides guidance on face-to-face, end-to-end, and body end standards for a uniform dimensional approach across manufacturers.
- Functional Performance: Details shell strength, flow coefficients, and flow characteristics to support accurate valve sizing and process control.
- Testing Procedures: Defines mandatory and supplementary tests, including shell strength, seat leakage, dead band, and flow capacity.
- Marking and Traceability: Sets out marking requirements to provide essential information on valve identification, manufacturing, and compliance.
- Exclusions: Clarifies that pinch valves and cast iron class-designated flanges are not covered by this standard.
Applications
Industrial process control valves compliant with SIST EN 1349:2011 are widely used in a range of sectors for regulating fluid flow, pressure, and temperature within process pipelines. Key uses include:
- Chemical Processing: Ensuring accurate and safe fluid management in reactors, pipelines, and auxiliary systems.
- Oil & Gas: Supporting upstream extraction, refining, and pipeline transport with robust and reliable flow control solutions.
- Water Treatment: Managing water flow, chemical dosing, and filtration processes.
- Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Maintaining precise processing conditions and hygiene standards.
- Power Generation: Assisting with steam, feedwater, and fuel flow control in power plants.
By adhering to the standard’s requirements, organizations benefit from enhanced valve reliability, easier maintenance, simplified procurement, and assurance of compatibility with European regulatory requirements such as the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC).
Related Standards
SIST EN 1349:2011 operates alongside several international and European standards relevant to industrial valves, including:
- EN 60534 Series: Industrial-process control valve terminology, sizing, inspection, and testing.
- EN 558: Standardized face-to-face and center-to-face dimensions for metal valves.
- EN 12266-1: Pressure testing procedures for valves.
- EN 12516: Shell design strength requirements for various valve materials.
- EN 1092 Series: Flange standards for steel and copper alloy valves.
- EN ISO 228-1: Pipe thread requirements for pressure-tight joints.
Collectively, these standards ensure interoperability, safety, and quality throughout the European valve manufacturing supply chain.
