1 Scope
This International Standard specifies a method for determining the comparative resistance of refractory materials to
carbon monoxide disintegration.
The test is intended to be more severe than conditions encountered in service in order to enable probable behaviour
of refractory materials to be assessed in a relatively short time.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this International Standard, the following terms and definitions apply.

breakdown of a refractory product caused by the deposition of carbon resulting from the dissociation of carbon mon-
oxide

resistance of a refractory product to carbon monoxide disintegration when exposed to carbon monoxide under spec-
ified conditions of atmosphere and temperature
4 Principle
Test pieces are exposed to a specified carbon monoxide atmosphere at a controlled temperature for a specified time.
NOTE Carbon monoxide is toxic and suitable safety precautions should be observed when carrying out this test e.g. monitoring
the atmosphere around the apparatus to detect leakage of carbon monoxide.

5.1 Furnace, of sufficient size to be capable of maintaining the test zone within the reaction chamber (5.2) to within

� 10 C at 500 C.
NOTE The furnace may be fitted with one or more observation ports to enable direct observation of the test samples during the
test when a glass reaction chamber is used.

5.2 Reaction chamber, comprising a gas-tight tube capable of withstanding a temperature of 500 C and made of
a material which does not react with carbon monoxide under the conditions of the test. The chamber shall be of a
suitable size to accommodate the test pieces (see clause 7) within the test zone. It shall be fitted with gas inlet and
outlet tubes so that the gas passes through the length of the test zone. Provision shall be made for the insertion of a
temperature measuring and recording device (5.3) to be located in the test zone and adjacent to the test pieces. The
chamber shall also contain supports on which to rest the test pieces and to prevent debris from falling into the cham-
ber in cases of disintegration during the test. The tubes and the support shall also be of a material unreactive to car-

bon monoxide and capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 500 C.
NOTE 1 Suitable materials for the reaction chamber are certain grades of stainless steel, brass, aluminium, unoxidised inconel
metal, glass and ceramic.

1 Domaine d'application
La présente Norme internationale spécifie une méthode de détermination de la résistance comparative des maté-
riaux réfractaires à la désagrégation par le monoxyde de carbone.
L'essai est réalisé dans des conditions plus contraignantes que les conditions d'exploitation réelles pour permettre
d'évaluer le comportement potentiel des matériaux réfractaires en un temps relativement court.

4Principe
Les éprouvettes sont exposées à une atmosphère spécifiée de monoxyde de carbone à une température contrôlée
pendant une période spécifiée.
NOTE Le monoxyde de carbone est toxique et il convient de prendre les précautions de sécurité appropriées pour la réalisation
de cet essai, par exemple surveillance de l'atmosphère autour de l'appareillage afin de détecter toute fuite de monoxyde de
carbone.

5.1 Four, de dimensions suffisantes pour permettre de maintenir la zone d'essai à l'intérieur de la chambre de

réaction (5.2) à une température de 500 C� 10 C.
NOTE Le four peut être équipé d’un ou plusieurs regards permettant d'observer directement les échantillons pendant l'essai lors-
qu'il est réalisé dans une chambre de réaction en verre.
5.2 Chambre de réaction, constituée d'un tube étanche aux gaz, capable de résister à une température de

500 C et d'un matériau qui ne réagit pas au monoxyde de carbone dans les conditions d'essai. La chambre doit
avoir des dimensions appropriées pour contenir les éprouvettes (voir article 7) dans la zone d'essai. Elle doit être
équipée de tubes d'admission et d'échappement pour permettre au gaz de circuler dans toute la longueur de la zone
d'essai. Des dispositions doivent être prises pour insérer un dispositif de mesurage et d’enregistrement de la
température (5.3) dans la zone d'essai, adjacent aux éprouvettes. La chambre doit également comporter des sup-
ports d'appui pour les éprouvettes et de protection contre toute chute de débris dans la chambre en cas de désagré-
gation pendant l'essai. Les tubes et les supports doivent également être constitués d'un matériau non réactif au

monoxyde de carbone et capable de résister à des températures jusqu'à 500 C.
NOTE 1 Les matériaux appropriés pour la chambre de réaction sont certaines nuances d'acier inoxydable, le laiton, l'aluminium,
le métal Inconel inoxydé, le verre et la céramique.
NOTE 2 La chambre de réaction peut être fermée à une extrémité et l'un des tuyaux à gaz peut être utilisé avec un second tuyau
pour soutenir le porte-éprouvettes aussi longtemps que les critères mentionnés ci-dessus sont maintenus. Selon la dimension de
la chambre de réaction et le nombre d'éprouvettes, il peut s'avérer nécessaire de prévoir des supports d'appui
