Overview

ISO 25206-1:2026 – Oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy - Enhanced oil recovery terms and definitions - Part 1: General vocabulary, establishes a unified set of core terms and definitions for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in the oil and gas sector. Developed by ISO Technical Committee 67, this standard provides essential vocabulary for EOR processes to support technical clarity, facilitate international collaboration, and promote best practices as the oil and gas industries transition towards lower carbon energy solutions.

The document encompasses general EOR terms as well as key terminology associated with the main categories of enhanced oil recovery, including thermal recovery, gas flooding, chemical flooding, and microbial EOR methods. By standardizing language across these fields, ISO 25206-1:2026 delivers a robust framework for both upstream operations and academic research.

Key Topics

  • Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR): Establishes the principal definition of EOR as a process involving the injection of materials not normally present in a reservoir to increase oil production beyond primary and secondary recovery methods.
  • Core EOR Methodologies: Standardizes vocabulary related to pivotal EOR technologies and processes:
    • Thermal Recovery: Including hot water flooding, steam flooding, steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD), fire flooding, and multi-component thermal flooding.
    • Gas Flooding: Covering hydrocarbon gas flooding, carbon dioxide flooding, nitrogen flooding, reduced oxygen air flooding, flue gas flooding, and foam flooding.
    • Chemical Flooding: Such as polymer flooding, alkaline flooding, surfactant flooding, binary combination, and alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) flooding.
    • Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR): Detailing both in-situ and ex-situ microbial processes.
  • Key Performance Terms: Definitions of oil recovery factor, sweep efficiency, and displacement efficiency, providing common ground for evaluating EOR performance.
  • Boundary Clarification: Excludes specialized terminology from reservoir, production, and surface engineering outside of EOR applications.

Applications

Adoption of ISO 25206-1:2026 delivers significant benefits across the oil and gas industry and supporting fields:

  • Operational Consistency: Oil and gas operators, technology providers, and engineering firms can reference standardized definitions when designing and implementing EOR projects, reducing misinterpretation and enhancing project management.
  • Cross-Border Collaboration: Facilitates international projects and joint ventures by eliminating language barriers and ambiguity in technical terminology used across partner organizations and regulatory bodies.
  • Training and Education: Provides a reference vocabulary for technical training programs and universities, strengthening workforce competence in emerging EOR technologies.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Ensures clarity and accuracy in technical documentation, reports, research papers, and data management systems throughout the EOR process lifecycle.
  • Regulatory Alignment: Aids regulatory authorities in maintaining clear compliance checklists and assessment procedures for EOR projects, especially within the framework of energy transition and carbon management strategies.

iv
Introduction
As enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies continue to advance and international collaborative projects
increase in number, there is a growing global demand for international standardization in this field. As a
universal technical language, terminology standards play a foundational role in international collaboration
by clearly defining the scope of the field and delineating boundaries with related disciplines.
To maintain terminological coherence across international EOR standards and to prevent conflicts in
application arising from ambiguous or contradictory definitions, coordinated efforts in standardization are
essential. The ISO 25206 series is being developed to establish a coherent framework of mutually reinforcing
definitions, ensuring conceptual alignment across all relevant international standards. This systematic
approach guarantees that precisely defined common terminology forms the essential basis for both the
understanding and implementation of EOR standards worldwide.
Based on the displacement medium and underlying mechanism, EOR is generally classified into the following
main types:
— thermal recovery;
— gas flooding;
— chemical flooding;
— microbial enhanced oil recovery.
This document provides general terms and definitions related to EOR, including fundamental concepts
covering the field and its subdivisions, as well as terms describing the major EOR technologies and their
associated processes. More specialized terminology for each specific category is defined in other parts of
the ISO 25206 series.
