ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)

This second edition replaces the first edition (ISO 19085-10:2018), which has been technically revised. The
main changes are as follows:
— the way of reference to ISO 19085-1:2021 has been simplified: boilerplates and their explanations
in Introduction have been deleted, since now redundant (deemed of use at 1st edition to explain the
functioning of a multi-part standards to readers of the sector used to old standalone standards);
— the Scope now specifies that machines are intended for continuous production use;
— the list of significant hazards has been moved to a new Annex A;
— subclause 6.2 has been updated and a new full noise test code has been added in Annex F;
— the verification sentences have been deleted since self-evident according to ISO Guide 78, 6.8.1.

mounted to the machine with a support not being in line with the riving knife (see Figure 1).
The saw blade guard shall be in accordance with the following requirements.
a) It shall be made of transparent material.
b) A front opening in the guard shall provide an unobstructed view of the saw blade and the cutting line to
a machine operator feeding the material to be cut. Position and size of the opening shall be such that the
operator does not need to assume an unnatural position, e.g. slouching or bend-over. The dimensions
of this opening shall be such that a test probe with the dimensions given in Annex K does not reach the
saw blade through this opening. Any other opening in the guard shall be in accordance with the safety
distance requirements of ISO 13857:2019.
c) In the area where the saw blade guard can come in contact with the rip fence in the lower position, the
maximum width of the saw blade guard shall not exceed 50 mm.
d) It shall rest on the table when the machine is not in use (see Figures 1 and 6). The pivots in the mounting
arrangement for the saw blade guard shall be designed in such a way that it is not possible to lock the
saw blade guard in an elevated position.
e) The lower inner edges of the sides of the saw blade guard shall be lined with a rib, made of plastic, light
alloy, wood or wood-based materials. This rib shall be a minimum 3 mm in width, and shall be designed
so as to prevent the saw blade teeth from cutting into the saw blade guard should the saw blade guard
be displaced from the line of cut (see Figure 3). If the rib is replaceable, the fixing arrangement shall be
such that it does not damage the saw blade, e.g. with brass screws.

level up to a maximum height of 5 mm above the largest saw blade for which the machine is designed.
j) The mounting arrangement of the saw blade guard shall not be capable of being moved out of position
without the aid of a tool.
k) The in-feed end of the saw blade guard shall have a “lead-in”. If the saw unit is fitted with the maximum
saw blade and raised to the maximum height, the lead-in shall allow the saw blade guard to be raised by
a work-piece with a thickness of at least 60 % of the maximum cutting height for which the machine is
designed. This can be achieved by a slope with an angle α of not more than 45° (see Figure 5).
l) It shall pass the saw blade guard rigidity test in Annex H.

Foreword
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that
this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at
www.iso.org/patents. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see www.iso.org/iso/foreword.html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 39, Machine tools, Subcommittee SC 4
Woodworking machines, in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical
Committee CEN/TC 142, Woodworking machines - Safety, in accordance with the Agreement on technical
cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 19085-10:2018), which has been technically
revised. The main changes are as follows:
— the references to ISO 19085-1:2021 have been simplified: boilerplates and their explanations in the
Introduction have been deleted, since they are now redundant (deemed of use at first edition to explain
the functioning of the ISO 19085 series;
— the Scope has been revised to specify that machines are intended for continuous production use;
— the list of significant hazards has been moved to a new Annex A;
— the verification sentences have been deleted since the text is self-evident;
— requirements on dimensions of the guard opening have been added in 5.6.1 b), avoiding the need for a
test and replacing the test probe figure and dimensions in former Annex K).
— the table and figure for the dimensions of machine table and extension table have been moved from the
former Annex H to 5.10.1, since they are requirements on design, not on testing like all other annexes;
— the requirements on the wedge cutting device have been moved from 5.11 to the new 5.10.5, since it is a
workpiece guiding device more than a safety appliance;
— subclause 6.2 has been updated and a new full noise test code has been added in Annex F.
A list of all parts in the ISO 19085 series can be found on the ISO website.
This document is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 19085-1:2021.

Introduction
The ISO 19085 series provides technical safety requirements for the design and construction of
woodworking machinery, as well as for the content of the relevant instruction handbook. It concerns
designers, manufacturers, suppliers and importers of the machines specified in the Scope of its parts.
This document is a type-C standard as stated in ISO 12100:2010.
This document is of relevance, in particular, for the following stakeholder groups representing the market
players with regard to machinery safety:
— machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organisations, market surveillance, etc.).
Others can be affected by the level of machinery safety achieved with the means of the document by the
above-mentioned stakeholder groups:
— machine users/employers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— machine users/employees (e.g. trade unions, organizations for people with special needs);
— service providers, for example, for maintenance (small, medium and large enterprises);
— consumers (in the case of machinery intended for use by consumers).
The above-mentioned stakeholder groups have been given the possibility to participate in the drafting
process of this document.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events are
covered are indicated in the Scope of this document.
When requirements of this type-C standard are different from those which are stated in type-A or type-B
standards, the requirements of this type-C standard take precedence over the requirements of the other
standards for machines that have been designed and built according to the requirements of this type-C
standard.
In this document, a subclause can refer to the same subclause of ISO 19085-1:2021 or give specific
requirements or both. The specific text can be subdivided into further subclauses.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types of
ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights
in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a) patent(s)
which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not
represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at
www.iso.org/patents. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to the World Trade
This document is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 19085-1:2021.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 19085-10:2018), which has been technically
revised. The main changes are as follows:
— — the way of referencereferences to ISO 19085--1:2021 hashave been simplified: boilerplates and their
explanations in the Introduction have been deleted, since they are now redundant (deemed of use at first
edition to explain the functioning of a multi-part standards to readers of the sector used to old standalone
standards);the ISO 19085 series;
— — the Scope has been revised to specify that machines are intended for continuous production use;
— — the list of significant hazards has been moved to a new Annex AAnnex A;;
— — the verification sentences have been deleted since the text is self-evident;
— — requirements on dimensions of the guard opening have been added in 5.6.15.6.1 b), avoiding the need
for a test and replacing the test probe figure and dimensions in former Annex K).
— — the table and figure for the dimensions of machine table and extension table have been moved from
anthe former Annex H to 5.10.15.10.1,, since they are requirements on design, not on testing like all other
annexes;
vi
— — the requirements on the wedge cutting device have been moved from 5.115.11 to the new
5.10.55.10.5,, since it is a workpiece guiding device more than a safety appliance;
— subclause 6.2— subclause 6.2 has been updated and a new full noise test code has been added
in Annex FAnnex F.
A list of all parts in the ISO 19085 series can be found on the ISO website.
This document is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 19085-1:2021.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A

Introduction
The ISO 19085 series provides technical safety requirements for the design and construction of woodworking
machinery, as well as for the content of the relevant instruction handbook. It concerns designers,
manufacturers, suppliers and importers of the machines specified in the Scope of its parts.
This document is a type-C standard as stated in ISO 12100:2010.
This document is of relevance, in particular, for the following stakeholder groups representing the market
players with regard to machinery safety:
— — machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— — health and safety bodies (e.g. regulators, accident prevention organisations, market surveillance).,
etc.).
Others can be affected by the level of machinery safety achieved with the means of the document by the above-
mentioned stakeholder groups:
— — machine users/employers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— — machine users/employees (e.g. trade unions, organizations for people with special needs);
— — service providers, e.g.for example, for maintenance (small, medium and large enterprises);
— — consumers (in the case of machinery intended for use by consumers).
The above-mentioned stakeholder groups have been given the possibility to participate in the drafting process
of this document.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events are
covered are indicated in the Scope of this document.
When requirements of this type-C standard are different from those which are stated in type-A or type-B
standards (as defined in ISO 12100:2010),, the requirements of this type-C standard take precedence over the
requirements of the other standards for machines that have been designed and built according to the
requirements of this type-C standard.
This document is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 19085-1:2021, which gives requirements
common to different woodworking machine types.
In this document, a subclause can refer to the same subclause of ISO 19085-1:2021 or give specific
requirements or both. The specific text can be subdivided into further subclauses.
