Overview

IEC 62841-2-25:2026 - Particular Requirements for Hand-held Chain Beam Saws is an international safety standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard specifies safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held chain beam saws that are designed for cutting wood or similar materials by a single operator. IEC 62841-2-25:2026 is specifically intended for chain beam saws as fully integrated units, not for attachments or conversions of other saw types. The document works in conjunction with IEC 62841-1:2014 and its amendments, supplementing the general safety requirements with additional clauses tailored to the particular hazards and operations associated with chain beam saws.

This standard does not cover:

  • Chain beam saw attachments for circular or chain saws
  • Conventional chain saws, tree service saws, or pole-mounted pruners

Key Topics

IEC 62841-2-25:2026 addresses several crucial safety and performance areas for manufacturers, certification bodies, and end-users:

  • Definitions and Scope: Clear terminology describing main components such as auxiliary handles, bar tip guards, base plates, chain barriers, and the saw chain.
  • General and Specific Safety Requirements: Enhanced safety provisions for handle design, operator instructions, and safety markings.
  • Mechanical and Electrical Safety: Requirements for the construction and testing of handles, guards, and protection from live parts, heating, overload, and mechanical hazards.
  • Marking and Instructions: Obligations for safety labeling, instructional content, and warnings (including mandatory warnings concerning kickback and safe operating practices).
  • Operation and Testing: Guidance on performance, endurance, moisture resistance, and heating tests under defined conditions.
  • Kickback Prevention: Specific measures and user instructions to minimize risks from kickback, a significant hazard unique to chain beam saws.
  • Maintenance and User Information: Safe procedures for maintenance, lubrication, sharpening, and changing guide bars or chains.

Applications

The standard is essential across a variety of contexts:

  • Manufacturers: Guides the design, testing, and labeling of hand-held chain beam saws destined for global markets to ensure product compliance and safety.
  • Testing and Certification Bodies: Establishes benchmarks for certifying product conformity to IEC safety requirements, particularly for mechanical and electrical hazards.
  • Importers and Distributors: Helps verify that products meet internationally recognized safety standards before entering specific markets.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Professionals: Provides information for risk assessment and mitigation in trade, contracting, and forestry sectors.
  • End-users: Ensures safe use through detailed instructions and warnings, reducing injuries caused by misuse or mechanical failures.

Related Standards

Integration and interoperability with other standards are key:

  • IEC 62841-1:2014 & IEC 62841-1:2014/AMD1:2025: General safety requirements for electric motor-operated tools, serving as the foundational standard.
  • IEC 62841-4-1: Covers general requirements for chain saws (not chain beam saws).
  • Future IEC 62841 Parts: Will address chain saws for tree service and pole-mounted pruners.
  • Other Relevant Standards: ISO 630-2:2021 (for structural steels in component construction).

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which
may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent
the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at https://patents.iec.ch. IEC
shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

part may be printed separately from the "General Power Tool Safety Warnings".
8.14.1.101 Safety instructions for chain beam saws
a) Wear eye protection. Appropriate protective equipment for face and eyes, hands, legs,
and feet is recommended. Adequate protective clothing will reduce personal injury by
flying debris or accidental contact with the saw chain.
b) Do not operate the chain beam saw in a tree, on a ladder, from a rooftop, or any
unstable support. Operation of a chain beam saw in this manner could result in serious
personal injury.
c) Always keep proper footing and operate the chain beam saw only when standing on
fixed, secure, and level surface. Slippery or unstable surfaces such as ladders can cause
a loss of balance or control of the chain beam saw.
d) Hold the chain beam saw by insulated gripping surfaces only, because the saw chain
can contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Saw chains contacting a "live" wire can make
exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and could give the operator an electric shock.
e) Keep hands away from cutting area and the saw chain. Keep your second hand on
auxiliary handle. If both hands are holding the saw, they cannot be cut by the saw chain,
and the chain beam saw can be effectively guided and any kickback can be controlled
effectively.
f) Keep hands and legs away from the saw chain and guide bar when the chain beam
saw is operating. A moment of inattention while operating the chain beam saw can cause
entanglement of your clothing or body with the saw chain.
g) Do not use the chain beam saw for operations that are not intended. Use of the chain
beam saw for operations different than intended could result in a hazardous situation.
h) Never hold the material being cut in your hands or across your leg while cutting.
Secure the material to be cut to a stable platform. It is important to support the work
properly to minimize body exposure, saw chain binding, or loss of control.
i) Follow all instructions when clearing jammed material, storing, or servicing the chain
beam saw. Make sure the switch is off and disconnect the plug from the power source.
Unexpected actuation of the chain beam saw while clearing jammed material or servicing
can result in serious personal injury.
j) Carry the chain beam saw by the auxiliary handle with the chain beam saw switched
off and the saw chain away from your body. When transporting or storing the chain
beam saw, always fit the guide bar cover. Proper handling of the chain beam saw will
reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with the moving saw chain.
k) Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease. Greasy, oily handles are slippery
causing loss of control.
l) Follow instructions for lubricating, chain tensioning, and changing bar and chain.
Improperly tensioned or lubricated chain can either break or increase the chance for
kickback.
8.14.1.102 Further safety instructions for kickback
Kickback causes and related warnings
Kickback is a reaction to a pinched or jammed saw chain, mostly occurring at the back side
of the guide bar not adequately protected by the chain barrier or at the nose of the guide bar
not protected by the tip guard. Kickback causes a sudden motion of the chain beam saw in a
direction opposite to the saw chain motion at the point where the saw chain is being jammed.
When the saw chain is jammed at the front of the guide bar, the cutting action will pull the
chain beam saw tightly to the workpiece surface, but when the saw chain is jammed at the
back of the guide bar, the kickback will suddenly push the chain beam saw up and away from
the workpiece surface. The jamming of the saw chain at the nose of the guide bar will create
a kickback that rotates the chain beam saw’s guide bar back towards the operator.
During the cutting process, most frequently the saw chain pinching/jamming occurs when the
workpiece is weakened by the cut and sags under its own weight or when the operator is trying
to "steer" and correct the line of the cut.
An improperly installed/adjusted chain barrier or tip guard can also allow undue exposure and
pinching/jamming of the saw chain.
Kickback is the result of tool misuse, incorrect operating procedures or conditions, or both, and
can be avoided by taking proper precautions, as follows. The kickback force can be managed
by an alert operator properly bracing and controlling the chain beam saw with both hands.
a) Support large workpieces to minimise the risk of saw chain pinching and kickback.
Large workpieces tend to sag under their own weight. Supports shall be placed under the
workpiece on both sides of the guide bar, near the line of cut and near the edge of the
workpiece.
b) All adjustment levers for the base plate shall be tight and secure before making the
cut. If the guide bar adjustments shift while cutting, it can cause binding and kickback.
c) Saw chain depth of cut and bevel adjusting locking levers must be tight and secure
before making the cut. If saw chain adjustment shifts while cutting, it may cause binding
and kickback.
d) The base plate of the chain beam saw shall be resting on the surface of the workpiece,
and the saw chain shall not be in contact with the material prior to starting the motor.
If the base plate is held above the workpiece surface during the cutting process and the
moving saw chain makes contact with the workpiece, the reaction to the cutting action can
slam the chain beam saw onto the workpiece, causing loss of operator control.
e) Maintain a firm grip with both hands on the handles of the chain beam saw and
position your arms to resist kickback forces. Position your body to either side of the
saw chain, but not in line with the plane of the guide bar. Kickback could cause the
chain beam saw to jump up and/or backwards.
f) If the saw chain is binding, or when interrupting a cut for any reason, release the
trigger and hold the chain beam saw motionless in the material until the saw chain
comes to a complete stop. Never attempt to remove the chain beam saw from the work
or pull the chain beam saw backward while the saw chain is in motion or kickback
may occur. Investigate and take corrective actions to eliminate the cause of saw chain
binding.
g) When restarting a chain beam saw in the workpiece, centre the saw chain in the kerf
so that the saw chain teeth are not engaged into the material. If a saw chain binds in
the workpiece as the motor is restarted, it can cause sudden jerking of the chain beam saw
and loss of control.
h) Follow the manufacturer’s sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw
chain. Decreasing the depth gauge height can lead to increased kickback.
i) Only use replacement guide bars and saw chains specified by the manufacturer.
Incorrect replacement guide bars and saw chains can cause chain breakage and/or
kickback.

suivants:
hands and body away from the saw chain or guide bar. Chain barrier shall always be attached and properly aligned
when operating the chain beam saw. Contact with the saw chain will result in serious injury."
8.3 Addition:
– la ou les longueurs et épaisseurs nominales spécifiées du guide-chaîne, en mm (in);
