AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which
may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent
the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at https://patents.iec.ch [and/or]
www.iso.org/patents. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

___________
1 Scope
Replace the existing text of the third paragraph of the Scope with the following new text:
The installation requirements of Group II or Group III systems designed in accordance with this
document are specified in IEC 60079-14. Where a specific requirement of IEC 60079-14 is
applied by this document, the same requirements can be applied for Group I.
2 Normative references
Add the following new normative reference:
IEC TS 60079-47, Explosive atmospheres – Part 47: Equipment protection by 2-wire
intrinsically safe ethernet concept (2-WISE)
3 Terms and definitions
Add to definition 3.3 the following new Note 1 to entry:
Note 1 to entry: Document, in this context, is any means of recording the required information. Examples include
reports, drawings, spreadsheets, and databases.
Add, after 3.9, the following new term and definition:
3.10
2-WISE system
assembly of interconnected items of 2-WISE devices, described in a descriptive system
document, in which the circuits or parts of the circuits, intended to be used in an explosive
atmosphere, are intrinsically safe circuits
[SOURCE: IEC TS 60079-47:2021, 3.5]
7 Non-intrinsically safe circuits
Replace the existing text of Clause 7 with the following new text:
The descriptive system document shall define the limitations for connection of circuits to the
non-intrinsically safe terminals of associated apparatus, such as the U value(s) and the
m
maximum permitted prospective short-circuit current of the supply if less than 1 500 A.
9.3 Intrinsic safety parameters of cables
Add, at the end of 9.3, the following new text:
Where a 2-WISE system is used, the requirements for the cable parameters shall comply with
Annex H.
Figure 1 – Systems analysis
Replace existing Figure 1 with the following new figure:
12.7.4 Effect of combined lumped capacitance and inductance
Replace the existing text of 12.7.4 with the following new text:
Where the total of all apparatus C values exceeds 1 % of the circuit’s C value and the total of
i o
all apparatus L values exceeds 1 % of the circuit’s L value, the permitted C and L of the
i o o o
circuit shall be determined by one of the following methods:
a) Where a system is powered from a single power source specified with permissible pairs of
C and L values these values shall not be exceeded by the sum of all C plus C and the
o o i c
sum of all L plus L respectively in the system.
i c
b) Reducing both by half, with the C of the circuit further limited to a maximum of 1 μF for
o
Groups I, IIA, IIB and III, and 600 nF for Group IIC taking into account circuit voltage and
relevant safety factor.
NOTE 1 The reduction by half is only needed where the C and L parameters are determined independently of
o o
one another by applying the spark ignition reference curves of IEC 60079-11, which can only be applied for
power sources with linear characteristics according to IEC 60079-11. The C and L parameters for non-linear
o o
power supplies are determined in combination by testing according to IEC 60079-11.
c) Spark ignition testing of the combination in accordance with IEC 60079-11.
d) Using the curves in C.7.
NOTE 2 Where a system contains both lumped capacitances and lumped inductances the interaction of these can
increase the risk of ignition capable sparks. This concern is confined to fixed inductance and capacitance and not to
the distributed parameters of a cable.
12.7.5 Determination of L/R
Delete the existing first paragraph of 12.7.5.
13 Predefined systems
Replace the existing text of Clause 13 with the following new text:
A system and all its individual devices may be predefined and previously assessed in such a
way that the interconnection of the individual devices and cables is sufficiently well known. In
such cases, the assessment requirements of this document can be simplified. Two such
predefined systems are the FISCO system and the 2-WISE system specified in
IEC TS 60079-47. The assessment of a FISCO system is set forth in Annex G and of a 2-WISE
system in Annex H.
NOTE The equipment requirements for 2-WISE equipment are specified in IEC TS 60079-47.
