Overview
FprEN IEC 60086-1:2025/prAA:2026 is a draft European standard amendment focused on the general requirements for primary batteries. Developed by CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), this amendment is designed to align existing battery standards with the European Union's latest regulatory framework, particularly Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 relating to batteries and waste batteries.
This amendment refines key definitions, updates terminologies, and ensures measurement methods for performance and durability of non-rechargeable portable batteries meet European expectations. It serves as a critical guideline for manufacturers, importers, and compliance professionals dealing with primary (non-rechargeable) batteries across Europe.
Key Topics
Updated Definitions and Terms
The amendment clarifies terminology for "cell," "battery," "minimum average duration (MAD)," and "leakage," resolving previous discrepancies with EU regulations to minimize confusion and improve cross-standard consistency.Delayed Discharge Performance
Introduction of the term "Delayed Discharge Performance (DDP)," specifying average battery duration after storage under specified conditions. This addition reflects the importance of battery stability and longevity in applications with extended storage requirements.Performance and Durability Testing
Ensures all performance and durability testing for non-rechargeable portable batteries is conducted using standardized measurement methods. This includes making Annex I normative and utilizing the verb "shall" for compliance clarity.Harmonization with EU Regulations
Specific alignment with Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 to facilitate presumption of conformity regarding battery performance, durability, and leakage resistance. The amendment provides a clear correspondence between the standard and regulatory requirements.Annexes and Normative References
Addition of Annex ZA and Annex ZZ covers references to international standards and documents the relationship between this standard and relevant EU regulatory obligations.
Applications
Product Development and Manufacturing
Battery designers and manufacturers leverage this standard to ensure their primary batteries satisfy essential safety, performance, and reliability requirements before market placement in Europe.Regulatory Compliance
Companies importing or distributing primary batteries in the EU rely on this standard to demonstrate conformity with mandatory EU directives, avoiding legal and market-entry issues.Testing and Quality Assurance
Quality managers and testing laboratories use these standardized definitions and testing methods for objective, repeatable assessment of battery performance, durability, and safety, enabling transparent comparison across products and suppliers.Market Surveillance and Procurement
Regulators and large-scale buyers reference this standard to enforce compliance and set benchmarks in private and public procurement processes for primary batteries.
