(Main)Miniature fuses - Part 5: Guidelines for quality assessment of miniature fuse-links
General Information
- Abstract
IEC 60127-5:2016 gives a guide for tests for assessing the quality of miniature fuse-links other than type tests, for the case where there is no complete agreement between the user and the manufacturer on what such tests apply. This document provides guidelines and limits generally acceptable for quality control purposes by large scale users and manufacturers of miniature fuse-links. This document has validity for large scale series with lot sizes of 10 000 and more. It is also applicable for smaller lot sizes, if necessary. Periodic inspections by reduced type tests (Clause 5) are intended to be carried out periodically in order to ensure that the level of technical performance previously verified by complete type tests as given in subsequent parts of the IEC 60127 series is maintained. The frequency of periodic in relation to lot-by-lot inspections is not established in this document. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1988. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - addition of new tables in 4.3; - addition of new tables in Clause 5. Keywords: quality of miniature fuse-links

Overview
EN 60127-5:2017 (CLC adoption of IEC 60127-5:2016) provides guidelines for the quality assessment of miniature fuse-links. It is intended for situations where the user and manufacturer have not fully agreed which non-type tests apply. The document is aimed mainly at large-scale series production (lot sizes of 10 000 and more) but is also applicable to smaller lots if required. This second edition replaces the 1988 edition and adds new tables for destructive tests and reduced type tests.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose
- Guidance for tests that assess quality other than full type tests.
- Ensures ongoing conformity with the technical performance established by complete type tests in other parts of the IEC 60127 series.
- Lot-by-lot inspection
- Sampling procedures referenced to IEC 60410 (AQL and inspection levels).
- Non‑destructive tests (visual, marking, mechanical, electrical continuity, dimensions).
- Destructive tests (time/current characteristic sampling for different fuse types) - new tables added in this edition.
- Periodic inspection
- Reduced type tests (Clause 5) intended to confirm that the performance level previously verified by full type tests is maintained in production.
- The standard describes which reduced type tests apply for cartridge, sub‑miniature, UMF and special-application fuse-links. The frequency of periodic vs. lot-by-lot inspections is not prescribed.
- Acceptance criteria
- Guidance on acceptable quality levels for major/minor defects, sample return policy, and when samples are destructive.
- Cross-references
- Normative references and dependencies on other parts of the IEC 60127 series (Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 7) and IEC 60410 for sampling.
Applications
- Manufacturers: set up production quality control, incoming/outgoing inspection plans, and supplier quality agreements for miniature fuse-links.
- Large-scale users / OEMs: define acceptance testing for purchased fuse-link lots, establish AQLs, and perform periodic re‑qualification to ensure continued compliance with type-tested performance.
- Test laboratories / QA teams: design lot-by-lot and reduced type test programs, implement non‑destructive and destructive test methods described.
- Procurement & compliance engineers: use the standard in contracts and quality clauses to ensure reliable overcurrent protection components.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in
addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and expenses
arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
