Overview
EN IEC 63522-46:2026 – Electrical Relays – Tests and Measurements – Part 46: Impulse Voltage Test is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under the auspices of the CENELEC (CLC) organization. This part of the IEC 63522 series specifies the procedures and requirements for the impulse voltage test, a critical evaluation to verify the insulation strength of electrical relays against transient overvoltages.
Impulse voltage testing is important for ensuring relays can withstand electrical surges that may occur during transportation, storage, and normal operation. This test contributes to the overall reliability, safety, and lifespan of relay components used in low-voltage and high-voltage electrical equipment.
Key Topics
Purpose of the Impulse Voltage Test
The impulse voltage test assesses whether relay insulation can endure transient overvoltages without breakdown or flashover, demonstrating the relay's ability to operate safely under severe electrical conditions.Test Procedure and Setup
- Preconditioning requirements as specified by relevant product standards.
- Test environments and conditioning periods prior to testing.
- Impulse voltage values sourced from referenced standards such as IEC 60664-1 and waveform requirements per IEC 61180.
- Application of altitude correction to simulate actual use-case scenarios.
- Example test circuits and recommended points for voltage application are provided for consistency and repeatability.
Evaluation Criteria
- Pass/fail is determined by the absence of dielectric breakdown, flashover, and by adhering to maximum permissible leakage current limits.
- Further functional and dielectric strength tests may be performed in accordance with related standards to ensure comprehensive evaluation.
Reporting Requirements
- The standard recommends detailed documentation of test results, including device identification, testing conditions, waveform details, and compliance results, to support traceability and reproducibility.
Applications
EN IEC 63522-46:2026 is applicable to manufacturers, testing laboratories, and certification bodies involved in the design, quality assurance, and type testing of electrical relays. Primary practical applications include:
Product Qualification and Certification
Ensures relays meet international safety and performance requirements by verifying the insulation system's robustness against high-energy voltage spikes.Design and Development
Supports engineers in designing relay products with appropriate insulation and surge withstand capabilities, facilitating compliance with global market access requirements.Quality and Compliance Testing
Provides standardized procedures for routine production testing, type approval, and failure analysis, helping maintain product safety and reliability.Integration into Electrical Systems
Important for utility, industrial, and commercial equipment designers who need to select or specify relays that will reliably operate in environments with exposure to transient voltages.
Related Standards
EN IEC 63522-46:2026 references and is closely aligned with several key international standards:

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
