Overview
prEN IEC 80000-17:2026 - Quantities and Units: Part 17 - Time Dependency is a draft international standard developed by the IEC and CLC (CENELEC) as part of the ISO/IEC 80000 series. This standard addresses the principles for representing, naming, and using symbols for time-dependent quantities across scientific, engineering, and industrial disciplines. By providing clear rules for the notation of quantities that vary with time, it ensures consistency and language independence in global technical communication, particularly in electrical engineering, physics, and related domains.
The standard focuses on codifying symbols for various components and special values (like instantaneous and root-mean-square values) of complex, time-dependent quantities. This effort supports clarity in documentation, data exchange, and standardization of scientific and technical publications.
Key Topics
- Time-Dependent Quantities: Covers the representation of quantities that change over time, which may be periodic, transient, or random.
- Standardized Symbols: Establishes systematic use of symbols, including the application of subscripts, superscripts, and diacritics to express maximum, minimum, average, and other values.
- Language Independence: Specifies a set of symbols usable in any language to foster clarity in international communication.
- Types of Quantities: Includes alternating quantities, transient behaviors, random variables, and combinations such as sums and products.
- System Alignment: Adheres to the International System of Quantities (ISQ) and the International System of Units (SI) for universal compatibility.
- Illustrative Tables: Provides comprehensive tables for symbols representing instantaneous values, maxima/minima, average values, and specific mathematical functions (such as step, ramp, and impulse functions).
Applications
prEN IEC 80000-17:2026 finds practical value in numerous fields that routinely deal with time-varying phenomena:
- Electrical Engineering: Facilitates consistent notation for alternating currents, voltages, and electromagnetic fluxes, supporting design, analysis, and documentation of AC circuits, waveforms, and signal processing.
- Physics & Measurement Science: Standardizes how transient and periodic physical quantities are represented in research and metrology, especially where clear differentiation of values (like RMS, peak, or average) is crucial.
- Industrial Automation and Control: Ensures that time-dependent variables in control systems, measurement equipment, and data loggers are labeled and communicated using recognized, unambiguous symbols.
- Technical Publications and Standards: Provides a framework for authors, engineers, and organizations to present complex time-dependent quantities uniformly in reports, textbooks, and regulatory documents.
- Software and Simulation: Enables accurate implementation of variable naming conventions in engineering software, models, and simulations involving time-varying processes.
By following the guidance of IEC 80000-17, professionals ensure compatibility across disciplines and platforms, reducing errors and improving understanding.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for
standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees).
The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning
standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other
activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC
Publication(s)"). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National
Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work.
International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also
participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical
committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted
by IEC National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that
the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the
way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC
Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional
publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corres ponding national or
regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies
provide conformity assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity.
IEC is not responsible for any services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including
individual experts and members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for
any personal injury, property damage or other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct
or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and expenses arising out of the publication, use
of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced
publications is indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve
the use of (a) patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability
of any claimed patent rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document,
IEC [had/had not] received notice of (a) patent(s), which may be required to implement this

INTRODUCTION
Time-dependent quantities can be periodic, transient or random and can be often represented
by a combination, e.g. sum, product, polynomial, etc., of components which are functions such
as trigonometric functions, exponentials, distributions, etc. They are denoted by specific
symbols which also can express specific characteristics like maximum, minimum, average by
various graphemes like subscripts, superscripts, diacritics, underscore, etc.
For time-dependent quantities, several different systems have been developed and used
depending on the number and the choice of base quantities on which the system is based.
However, in time dependency and electrical engineering, only the International Sys tem of
Quantities, ISQ, and the associated International System of Units, SI, are acknowledged and
are reflected in the standards of ISO and IEC. The SI has seven base units, among them meter,
symbol m, kilogram, symbol kg, second, symbol s, and ampere, symbol A.
The various possibilities for symbols for time-dependent quantities are presented in tables with
examples. No specific quantities are considered but place holders or abstract quantities.
All symbols and graphemes are language independent.
The items given in IEC 80000-17 are generally in conformity with the International
Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEV).
