Overview

EN ISO 15783:2003/A1:2008 - Seal-less rotodynamic pumps (Class II) - Amendment 1 is a CEN-adopted amendment to the ISO 15783:2003 specification. The standard specifies requirements for seal-less rotodynamic pumps of Class II that are driven either by permanent magnet couplings or by canned motors. These pump types are primarily intended for use in the chemical process, water treatment, and petrochemical industries where shaft-sealing systems are undesirable or pose contamination/leakage risks.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and application: Defines the intended pump types (seal-less rotodynamic pumps) and the driving arrangements covered (permanent magnet coupling, canned motor).
  • Class II specification: Establishes the classification and general specification framework for Class II seal-less pumps (as opposed to other classes in the parent standard).
  • Materials list update (Annex F): Amendment 1 replaces Table F.1 - the comprehensive table of internationally and nationally accepted materials for pump parts. This table maps ISO/ASTM/UNS designations to EN and JIS equivalents and helps ensure material compatibility for corrosion, pressure, and mechanical performance.
  • Standards development context: Prepared by ISO/TC 115 (Pumps) in collaboration with CEN/TC 197, the amendment was circulated as a draft for parallel enquiry and endorsement by CEN members.

Note: The amendment is primarily focused on material specifications and tabulated equivalencies (Annex F). It does not itself redefine pump dimensions or hydraulic performance values beyond the original ISO 15783:2003 specification.

Applications and users

This standard and its amendment are directly relevant to:

  • Pump manufacturers designing and certifying seal-less rotodynamic pumps (permanent magnet coupling or canned motor designs).
  • Process engineers and plant designers specifying pumps for chemical processing, petrochemical units, and water/wastewater treatment where leakage prevention and containment are critical.
  • Procurement and quality teams who require standardized material equivalencies to ensure component interchangeability and compliance.
  • Regulatory and compliance officers verifying that installed equipment meets recognized European/ISO material and construction practices.

Related information

  • Produced under the joint ISO/CEN process (ISO/TC 115 and CEN/TC 197).
  • Amendment 1 specifically updates Annex F (Table F.1) to align internationally and nationally accepted materials for pump parts.

Keywords: EN ISO 15783:2003/A1:2008, seal-less rotodynamic pumps, Class II pumps, permanent magnet coupling, canned motor pumps, materials for pump parts, chemical process industry, water treatment, petrochemical.

ISO 15783:2002/Amd.1:2008(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
Amendment 1 to ISO 15783:2002 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 115, Pumps, Subcommittee
SC 1, Dimensions and technical specifications of pumps.
