General Information
- Abstract
This part of FprEN 17176 specifies the material characteristics of oriented unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-O) solid wall piping systems intended for water supply and for buried drainage, sewerage and irrigation under pressure or above-ground where protected from direct sunlight.
In conjunction with FprEN 17176-2, FprCEN/TS 17176-3 and EN ISO 1452-3, it is applicable to PVC-O pipes, PVC-O fittings, their joints and to joints with components of other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for the following:
a) water mains and services lines;
b) conveyance of water for both outside and inside buildings;
c) drainage, sewerage and treated waste water under pressure;
d) irrigation under pressure.
Joints constructed of other materials shall meet their own standards in addition to the fitness of purpose requirements specified in FprEN 17176-5.
It is applicable to piping systems intended for the supply of water with a maximum allowable operating pressure (PFA) up to and including 25 bar . The piping system according to this document is intended for the conveyance of cold water up to and including 45 °C and especially in those applications where special performance requirements are needed, such as impact loads and pressure fluctuations.
For temperatures between 25 °C and 45 °C, FprEN 17176-2:2018, Figure C.1 applies.
NOTE It is the responsibility of the purchaser or specifier to make the appropriate selections from these aspects, taking into account their particular requirements and any relevant national regulations and installation practices or codes.

Overview
EN 17176-1:2019 is the CEN system standard that sets out the general material requirements for oriented unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑O) solid‑wall piping systems. It applies to PVC‑O pipes, PVC‑O fittings and their joints used for water supply, buried and above‑ground pressure drainage, sewerage and irrigation (above ground only where protected from direct sunlight). The document defines the intended service envelope - cold water up to and including 45 °C and systems with a maximum allowable operating pressure (PFA) up to and including 25 bar - and establishes the material‑level framework for safe, long‑term performance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material characteristics: general requirements for PVC‑O compounds, including provisions for virgin and reprocessed materials and special rules where contact with drinking water is intended.
- Material classification: methods to classify material performance including MRS (Minimum Required Strength), lower prediction limit (LPL) and design stress, plus the orientation factor (λ) related to the PVC‑O manufacturing process.
- Geometrical definitions and tolerances: clear definitions of nominal diameters (DN), mean outside/inside diameters, wall thickness, SDR and pipe series (S).
- Service conditions: specified temperature and pressure limits (PFA ≤ 25 bar; cold water ≤ 45 °C) and guidance for higher temperature considerations (EN 17176‑2 Figure C.1 for 25–45 °C).
- Joints and compatibility: applicability to joints between PVC‑O components and components made from other plastics and non‑plastics; joints made of other materials must meet their own standards in addition to the system fitness‑for‑purpose requirements (EN 17176‑5).
- Referenced test methods and standards: normative references include EN 17176‑2 (pipes), CEN/TS 17176‑3 (fittings), EN ISO 9080 (long‑term hydrostatic strength), EN ISO 3126 (dimensions), EN ISO 1452 series (PVC‑U), and others.
Applications and who uses it
EN 17176‑1:2019 is used by:
- Manufacturers of PVC‑O pipes and fittings to define compound requirements and product classification.
- Design engineers and specifiers preparing project specifications for water mains, service lines, pressure drainage, sewerage and irrigation networks.
- Utilities and contractors selecting materials for buried distribution, pressure irrigation and treated wastewater conveyance.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors verifying material and dimensional compliance.
- Procurement and regulatory bodies ensuring products meet CEN system requirements and national regulations.
Practical applications include potable water mains, service connections, pressurized sewer and drainage lines, and pressure irrigation risers where improved impact resistance and performance under pressure fluctuations are required.

Introduction
The System Standard, of which this is Part 1, specifies the requirements for a piping system made from
oriented unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-O) and its components. The piping system is intended
to be used for water supply, pressurized drainage, sewerage, treated waste water and irrigation
systems to be used underground or above ground where protected from direct sunlight.
In respect of potential adverse effects on the quality of water intended for human consumption, caused
by the products covered by this part of EN 17176, the following is relevant:
a) This part of EN 17176 provides no information as to whether or not the products can be used
without restriction.
b) Existing national regulations concerning the use and/or the characteristics of these products
remain in force.
Requirements and test methods for PVC-O components are specified in EN 17176-2 and
CEN/TS 17176-3:2018. For other components (not manufactured from PVC-O) reference is made to the
following standards: EN ISO 1452-3 (PVC-U) and EN 12842 (Cast Iron). Characteristics for fitness of
purpose (mainly for joints) are specified in EN 17176-5.
This part of EN 17176 specifies the general aspects and characteristics of materials.
