EN 10207:2017
(Main)Steels for simple pressure vessels - Technical delivery requirements for plates, strips and bars
General Information
- Abstract
This European Standard specifies the technical delivery requirements for plates, strips and bars made of steel in accordance with the specifications for pressurized parts in simple pressure vessels as defined in the Directive 2014/29/EU (see Annex A) and standardized in EN 286-1 to EN 286-3.
NOTE Once this European Standard is published in the EU Official Journal (OJEU) under Directive 2014/29/EU, presumption of conformity to the Essential Safety Requirements (ESRs) of Directive 2014/29/EU is limited to technical data of materials in this European Standard and does not presume adequacy of the material to a specific item of equipment. Consequently, the assessment of the technical data stated in this material standard against the design requirements of this specific item of equipment to verify that the ESRs of Directive 2014/29/EU are satisfied, needs to be done.

Overview
EN 10207:2017 - Steels for simple pressure vessels - Technical delivery requirements for plates, strips and bars - is a European Standard published by CEN that defines material delivery requirements for steels used in pressurized parts of simple pressure vessels under Directive 2014/29/EU. The standard applies to plates, strips and bars and covers classification, chemical composition, mechanical properties, manufacturing and inspection rules to support safe, repeatable supply of pressure‑vessel steels.
Key Topics
- Scope & conformity: Specifies technical delivery requirements for material used in simple pressure vessels (see Annex A) and clarifies that presumption of conformity to the Directive’s Essential Safety Requirements (ESRs) is limited to the material data in the standard - designers must still verify suitability for specific equipment.
- Steel grades: Defines typical grades used for simple pressure vessels (for example P235S, P265S, P275SL) and their classification under EN 10020.
- Manufacturing & delivery condition: Requires products to be delivered normalized or in an equivalent condition obtained by normalizing rolling; steels must be fully killed and not susceptible to ageing.
- Chemical composition: Includes cast-analysis limits and permissible product-analysis deviations for elements such as C, Si, Mn, P, S, N and Al (note: a minimum total Al of 0.020 % is specified unless other nitrogen‑binding elements are present).
- Mechanical properties & tests: Defines tensile, yield and elongation requirements referenced to nominal thickness, and requires tests such as tensile (room and elevated temperature), Charpy impact (EN ISO 148‑1), chemical analysis and ultrasonic testing for internal soundness.
- Dimensions, tolerances & surface: References EN standards for dimensional tolerances and surface condition for plates, strips and bars.
- Inspection & documentation: Specifies inspection levels, sampling, test-piece preparation and inspection documents (EN 10204 types), and marking requirements.
Applications
EN 10207:2017 is used by:
- Steel manufacturers and mills producing pressure vessel plate, strip and bar products.
- Pressure vessel designers and fabricators specifying materials for simple pressure vessels standardized in EN 286‑1 to EN 286‑3.
- Procurement, quality and conformity assessment teams preparing orders and inspection documentation.
- Notified bodies and assessors verifying material data against Directive 2014/29/EU ESRs.
Practical benefits include consistent material quality, traceable test documentation, and alignment with EU regulatory requirements for simple pressure-vessel materials.
