Overview
CEN/TS 17766:2022 specifies a standardized method for the extraction of elements from organic and organo-mineral fertilizers using water. The extracted solutions are intended for subsequent elemental determination (for example by ICP-AES) and are compatible with analysis according to CEN/TS 17774. The method supports reproducible sample preparation for quality control, regulatory compliance and comparative testing across laboratories.
Key benefits: reproducibility, simple reagents (water), and direct compatibility with established instrumental techniques (ICP-AES; ICP-MS as an alternative when equivalence is demonstrated).
Key Topics
Scope and applicability
- Applies to organic and organo-mineral fertilizers.
- Designed to produce aqueous extracts suitable for elemental analysis.
Principle
- Extraction by shaking the test portion in water under defined conditions to solubilize target elements prior to instrumental determination.
Sampling and sample preparation
- Sampling and preparation should follow the principles of EN 1482 (all parts) with adaptations for organic and organo-mineral matrices.
Reagents and apparatus
- Reagent: distilled or demineralized water.
- Apparatus (examples):
- 500 ml graduated (e.g. Stohmann) flask
- Rotary shaker (35–40 turns per minute)
- Dry pleated, phosphate-free filter
Procedure (condensed)
- Weigh 5.000 g of the laboratory sample to the nearest 0.001 g into the graduated flask.
- Add 450 ml of water at 20 °C to 25 °C.
- Shake on the rotary shaker for 30 minutes.
- Make up to the mark with water, mix, and filter through a dry pleated filter.
- Extracts can be stored at (4 ± 3) °C for at least two days before determination.
Note: ICP-MS may be used as an alternative measurement technique if the user demonstrates equivalence with the prescribed method.
Applications
This technical specification is practical for:
- Laboratory quality control of organic and organo-mineral fertilizer batches.
- Preparatory extraction prior to elemental analysis by ICP-AES or validated ICP-MS.
- Routine compliance testing where an aqueous extraction is required to assess soluble element fractions.
Practical value includes simplified sample handling (water as reagent), reproducible extraction conditions, and direct integration with instrumental workflows for element quantification.
Related Standards
- EN 1482 (all parts) - sampling and sample preparation for fertilizers and liming materials.
- CEN/TS 17774 - determination of specific elements by ICP-AES after extraction by water (direct follow-up method for analysis).
This specification was approved by CEN for provisional application in 2022 and is intended to harmonize extraction practice for organic and organo-mineral fertilizers across member bodies.
