Overview
prEN ISO 29022:2026 – Dentistry - Adhesion - Notched-edge Shear Bond Strength Test is an international draft standard developed by CEN and ISO (ISO/DIS 29022:2026) that specifies a reliable laboratory method to determine the adhesive bond strength between dental restorative materials-primarily dental adhesives-and tooth structures like dentine or enamel. This notched-edge shear bond strength test enables manufacturers, research laboratories, and dental professionals to evaluate the performance of adhesive systems, ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of dental restorations. The standard covers critical aspects such as substrate selection, handling and storage of teeth, surface preparation, specimen production, and execution of the notched-edge shear test.
Key Topics
- Bond Strength Measurement: Defines the procedure for quantifying the adhesive force required to break a bond between treatment materials and tooth tissue, ensuring objective comparison of dental adhesives.
- Tooth Substrate Selection: Details the types and characteristics of suitable human or bovine teeth for use in the test to maintain consistency and reproducibility.
- Specimen Preparation and Storage:
- Guidelines for initial tooth treatment, including cleaning, cutting, and preservation to minimize protein degradation.
- Detailed instructions for mounting (potting) teeth and preparing flat, standardized bonding surfaces using specified abrasive grits as per ISO 6344-3.
- Adhesive and Composite Application: Outlines the precise method for applying adhesives and restorative composites, including the use of button moulds and handling techniques to avoid introducing errors.
- Notched-Edge Shear Test Apparatus: Specifies the equipment configuration and alignment requirements for accurate, repeatable testing using a universal testing machine.
- Data Collection and Reporting: Provides clear requirements for recording test results, statistical analysis (including coefficients of variation), and standardized reporting to support comparability and transparency.
Applications
The notched-edge shear bond strength test as defined in prEN ISO 29022:2026 is essential for:
- Dental Materials Research: Enables laboratories and manufacturers to assess and compare the adhesive performance of various dental restorative materials, including newly developed adhesives and composites.
- Product Quality Control: Assists manufacturers in guaranteeing the strength and reliability of dental adhesives before placing products on the market, ensuring patient safety and product performance.
- Academic and Clinical Research: Used in studies involving dental adhesion to evaluate factors influencing bond strength, such as surface preparation and adhesive formulations.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports compliance with international standards and national regulations by providing recognized test methods for adhesive strength evaluation.
- Material Selection in Practice: Helps dental professionals and procurement specialists select adhesives and materials with proven adhesion to tooth structures, promoting long-lasting restorations.

Introduction
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) draws attention to the fact that it is claimed that
compliance with this document may involve the use of a patent concerning testing shear bond strength.
ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity and scope of this patent right.
The holder of this patent right has ensured ISO that he/she is willing to negotiate licenses under reasonable
and non-discriminatory terms and conditions with applicants throughout the world. In this respect, the
statement of the holder of this patent right is registered with ISO. Information may be obtained from:
Neil T. Jessop, Ultradent Products, Inc., 505 West 10200 South, South Jordan, Utah 84095-3942, USA.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights other than those identified above. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such
patent rights.
The purpose of this International Standard is to establish a simple and easy to use method for documenting a
claim that a material adheres to tooth substance. While the method described in this International Standard
has been used for comparing dental adhesive materials, users of this International Standard should evaluate
usefulness of this method for their particular application(s). There is a variety of other dental adhesion test
methods that may also be suitable or preferable, depending on the objective (e.g. academic research).

1 Scope
This International Standard specifies a shear test method used to determine the adhesive bond strength
between direct dental restorative materials and tooth structure, e.g. dentine or enamel. The method as
described is principally intended for dental adhesives. The method includes substrate selection, storage and
handling of tooth structure, as well as the procedure for testing.
NOTE 1 Testing adhesion to tooth structure is technique sensitive and experience with the test method is required.
NOTE 2 With modification, it may be possible to use this method for adhesive restorative materials (e.g. glass-
ionomer materials).
