Overview
prEN 18388: Inhibitors - Determination of the Chloride Content by Ion Chromatography and Conductivity Detection (IC-CD) is a draft European Standard developed by CEN/TC 260. This standard specifies a laboratory method for accurately determining the chloride content in inhibitors and inhibiting compounds - including mixtures - using ion chromatography (IC) coupled with conductivity detection (CD).
Chloride content is a critical parameter for quality control and regulatory compliance in the manufacture and application of inhibitors, especially those used in fertilizers and agrochemicals. prEN 18388:2026 sets out a clear, validated protocol to ensure reliable, repeatable, and reproducible measurement of chloride across a wide range of inhibitor materials.
Key Topics
Determination Method: The standard outlines procedures using ion chromatography with conductivity detection for quantifying chloride ions in aqueous solutions of inhibitors. This ensures specificity and sensitivity required for quality testing.
Scope of Application: Suitable for a variety of inhibitors and inhibiting compounds, including solid and liquid formats, as well as single or mixed compositions.
Sample Preparation and Calibration: Detailed instructions include representative sample collection, dilution and filtration, and preparation of calibration standards with traceable chloride concentrations.
Laboratory Equipment: The procedure requires:
- Ion chromatography device with conductivity detector
- Analytical balance
- Laboratory glassware and filtration devices
- Certified reagents and standards
Quality Assurance and Precision:
- Includes requirements for quality control samples and performance checks
- Presents data from inter-laboratory validation studies, demonstrating method repeatability and reproducibility
Calculation and Reporting: Specifies calculation methods for determining chloride concentration and requirements for reporting results in a standardized format.
Applications
- Fertilizer Manufacturing: Ensures compliance with regulatory limits for chloride content in fertilizer inhibitors, impacting product quality and safety.
- Regulatory Testing: Used by analytical laboratories, manufacturers, and inspection agencies for conformity assessment.
- Research and Development: Provides a reliable analytical technique for R&D activities involving new inhibitor formulations and quality improvement studies.
- Quality Control: Supports consistent manufacture and certification of inhibitors by confirming they meet specified chloride thresholds.
Adopting prEN 18388:2026 helps laboratories, manufacturers, and regulators ensure consistent, comparable results when determining chloride levels in various inhibitors, enhancing product credibility and compliance.
