This document specifies minimum design and functional performance requirements for protective clothing
against specified chemicals in the workplace and unidentified chemicals in emergency situations. These
requirements cover all relevant parts of the ensemble which are attached/fitted to the chemical protective
clothing for example garment, visor, gloves, boots or bootees, ventilation (non-breathing), and other design
features.
This document does not specifically address protection against biological, thermal (flame, heat or cold), and
ionizing radiation hazards as specific requirements are covered by other relevant standards.

Introduction
This document addresses the design requirements for chemical protective clothing by designating specific
design types and providing classification of clothing, material, and component performance. This document
is intended to provide comprehensive design requirements for the performance of chemical protective
clothing together with ISO/DIS 16602-1 and ISO/DIS 16602-5.
This document is part of a series of standards for test methods and requirements for both limited use and
reusable chemical protective clothing. ISO/DIS 16602 consists of the following parts, under the general
title "Protective clothing for protection against chemicals — Classification, labelling and performance
requirements":
— Part 1: General requirements;
— Part 2: Physical test methods, classification and requirements;
— Part 3: Chemical test methods, classification and requirements;
— Part 4: Test methods, classification and requirements for specific designs and ensemble components
including gloves, footwear, and respirators;
— Part 5: Garment test methods, classification and requirements;
— Part 6: Guidance on Selection, Use, Care and Maintenance.
This series of documents is intended to provide a modular approach to design and specification for chemical
protective clothing accommodating the variety and severity of risks found, and activities carried out, in the
workplace. This document includes the requirements of ISO 8194 on radiation protection so that it can be
withdrawn.
The Type 1 through Type 6 garments were originally created to differentiate garment performance through
a specific garment test(s): These “Type” garments could not be placed in an intrinsic hierarchy, although
the fabric barrier performances (intrinsic properties of the fabric and seams) created an indirect hierarchy
in certain cases. For example, Type 1 is in general more protective than Type 2, Type 5 and Type 6; and
Type 3 is, in general, more protective than Type 4 and Type 6. Although the Type 1-Type 6 system has been
superseded by the modular approach, a correlation table will be available.
In the previous ISO 16602 (and EN equivalents EN 13034, EN 14605, EN 943 series, EN 1073 series, and
EN 14325), there is a link between the garment tests, the Type (Type 1 through Type 6), and the physical
and chemical requirements of materials and components. This revision of the ISO 16602 series (intended
to be an EN ISO standard), applies a modular approach that breaks that link. Nevertheless, the existing test
methods from ISO 16602 and in other European standards (e.g EN 14325:2018) have been used as the basis
for this revision.
The selection of appropriate chemical protective clothing should be based on a risk assessment. In this
assessment the user organization identifies the hazards, and determines:
— the potential for chemical contact with individual workers,
— the consequences of exposure, and
— the type of practices or controls needed to eliminate or minimize exposure.
When it is determined that chemical protective clothing is needed, the risk assessment should identify
the chemical protective clothing required in terms of its overall performance requirements from physical
characteristics, chemical protection and garment test perspective. ISO/DIS 16602-6 is intended to assist
user organizations with these determinations.

1 Scope
This document specifies minimum design and functional performance requirements for protective clothing
against specified chemicals (including solids, airborne particles, aerosols, liquids, and gases (including
radioactive contamination)) in the workplace and unidentified chemicals in emergency situations. These
requirements cover all relevant parts of the ensemble which are attached/fitted to the chemical protective
clothing, for example garment, visor, gloves, boots or bootees, ventilation (non-breathing), and other design
features.
This document does not specifically address protection against biological, thermal (flame, heat or cold), and
ionizing radiation hazards as specific requirements are covered by other relevant standards.
This type of equipment is not intended for immersion in liquids.
The basic performance criteria for the components such as gloves, boots or respiratory protective equipment
are given in other standards. Supplementary requirements are provided in this standard.
Chemicals such as violently air sensitive reagents, unstable explosives and cryogenic liquids have not been
considered since protection against these additional hazards is beyond the scope of this standard.

4 General requirements for garments and ensembles
4.1 General
The requirements below cover components and their interrelation with various parts of the ensemble that
fall under this series of documents.
These types of garment and ensembles (including seams and assemblages) are not intended for immersion
in liquids, nor are they tested under immersion conditions.
All the garments shall meet the minimum physical and chemical ingress requirements according to
ISO/DIS 16602-1:— (5 and 6).
The garment or ensemble integrity shall be tested and ascertained using the garment test as described in
ISO/DIS 16602-5 in association with one or more practical performance tests. The interfaces of a garment
or ensemble shall be examined, when additional PPE to the garment is worn, to ensure that the wearer’s
body is fully covered throughout a single of the practical performance tests or a series of such tests (see
ISO/DIS 16602-1 and ISO/DIS 16602-5).
The modules of the garment tests, as described this document and in ISO/DIS 16602-5, are not intended
to be hierarchical, but define different protection levels by the form of the chemical risk (gas or liquid, or
particulate) and in the case of liquid by the intensity and quantity of the spray.
If the manufacturer's instructions require or indicate that any interfaces between different components of
an ensemble should be taped (such as at wrists and ankles) then testing shall be carried out with tape applied
(see details in Manufacturer’s Instructions (IFU), ISO/DIS 16602-1:— (11.1 (c)) and ISO/DIS 16602-5:— (6.1).
NOTE As taping is more difficult depending on the garment design, specialist/manufacturer training may be
required. If tape specific to the garment is required to achieve the requirements, this information is important for the IFU.

4.2 Vapour/gas resistant design
The vapour/gas resistant design shall only include ensembles that meet one of the following requirements:
1. Totally encapsulating one-piece suits that cover the whole body including the head, the hands and the
feet, and the respiratory system.
NOTE This includes suits with a breathing air supply that is independent of the ambient atmosphere worn inside
the suit, or suits with an external source of breathable air providing positive pressure inside the suit.
2. Totally encapsulating one-piece suits that cover the whole body including the hands and the feet but
not the respiratory interface. Such suits shall have a permanent or non-permanent seal between the
respiratory interface and the rest of the garment.
NOTE This includes suits with a breathing air supply that is independent of the ambient atmosphere worn outside
the suit.
If the face-piece is attached to the garment in a non-permanent manner the seal between the face-piece
and garment shall also be tested in accordance with ISO/DIS 16602-5 (6.4.2.2). The total stain area on the
undergarment shall be less than three times the calibrated stain area. The test shall be carried out from
both the front and the rear. Such garments shall be tested according to 4.3 and shall meet a mean value of
the total inward leakage classification of 0,05 % or better (Class 7, see Table 1).
The vapour/gas resistant design shall be tested according to the garment test requirements in
ISO/DIS 16602-5:— (6.2) and meet the following: “rigorous test method”. The complete suit shall be tested
according to ISO 17491-1:2012, Method 2. The pressure drop during the course of the 6-minute test shall not
be greater than 300 Pa (3 mbar).
For garments without integral visor, full face-piece(s), complying with ISO 17420-1, shall be used. No other
respiratory interfaces are allowed.
The closure assembly shall be strength tested according to ISO/DIS 16602-2:— (5.7).
For closure systems including a flap, the flap shall be designed such that it fully covers all zipper components
and is secured to the fabric of the garment (e.g. touch and close fastener or alternative closure mechanism)
to prevent liquid ingress. The flap shall be tested using the garment liquid jet resistance design test of sub-
clause 4.4. Visual inspection shall check that liquid has not penetrated the flap enabling it to potentially rest
on top of the zipper (see ISO/DIS 16602-3:— (10.4.4)). In case of failure, the closure system shall be tested for
permeation.
For ET chemicals pressure tight design, the permeation for the zippers (ISO/DIS 16602-3:— (10.4.4) shall be
required not only for gases but also for liquids even when there is a flap.
The outside of the pressure-tight chemical protective garment shall not have any pockets or features similar
to pockets. Pockets and/or features inside the pressure-tight chemical protective garment are allowed.
Three ensembles shall be tested.
These garments shall be marked according to ISO/DIS 16602-1:— (Annex B, Figure B.1.1).
4.3 Inward-leakage and particulate resistant design
The inward-leakage and particulate resistant design shall only include ensembles that meet one of the
following requirements:
1. Garments and ensembles designs listed in 4.2,
2. One-piece garments as in 1. above but with potentially separate hood, gloves and/or boots.
The inward-leakage and particulate resistant design shall be tested according to the garment test
requirements in ISO/DIS 16602-5:— (6.3). If the garment provides chemical protection in addition to
particulate protection, the garment shall meet the permeation requirement described in ISO/DIS 16602-1:—
(6) and of ISO/DIS 16602-3:— (6).

Inward leakage and particulate test results of the protective clothing shall be classified according to Table 1
below based on the mean value for all activities (%). For air-supplied clothing the air shall be supplied at the
minimum design air flow rate:

The limit of detection in the test lab shall be at least a factor 10 lower than the class requirement, other than
for the Classes 10 and 11 where the factors shall be at least 5 and 2, respectively.
Eight samples shall be tested on four test subjects (if more than one size of the garment is available, at least
two different sizes shall be used on subjects of different sizes), two garments per test subject.
The test shall be carried out according to ISO/DIS 16602-5:— (6.3, Annex C).
These garments shall be marked according to ISO/DIS 16602-1:— (Annex B, Figure B.1.2).
The outside of the inward-leakage and particulate resistant garment shall not have any pockets or features
similar to pockets. Pockets and/or features inside the inward-leakage and particulate resistant garment are
allowed.
NOTE 2 Particulate counters are sometimes clipped to a garment using “open” pockets (i.e. pockets that cannot
cumulate particulates as they are open at the bottom). The “open” pocket should not be considered as a pocket.
Particulate protection is limited to physical penetration of the particulates only.
4.4 Liquid resistant designs
4.4.1 General
The liquid resistant design shall only include garments or ensembles that meet one of the following
requirements:
