Overview
EN ISO 22744-1:2020 - "Textiles and textile products - Determination of organotin compounds - Part 1: Derivatisation method using gas chromatography" - is a CEN-endorsed ISO test method for the qualification and quantification of organotin (organostannic) compounds in textile materials. The method covers sample extraction, chemical derivatisation to volatile alkyl derivatives, and analysis by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC‑MS). It is applicable to all textile product materials (see CEN/TR 16741 for material applicability) and includes requirements for reagents, apparatus, calibration and result expression.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and principle
- Extract organotin substances from textiles using a methanol–ethanol mixture with tropolone as complexing agent.
- Convert non‑volatile organotins to volatile alkyl derivatives using sodium tetraethylborate (NaB(Et)4) (derivatisation).
- Detect and quantify by GC‑MS.
- Target compounds and internal standards
- Covers mono-, di-, tri- and tetra‑substituted organotins (examples: methyltin, di‑n‑butyltin, tri‑n‑butyltin, tetra‑n‑butyltin, triphenyltin).
- Lists recommended internal standards (e.g., n‑heptyltin trichloride, di‑n‑heptyltin dichloride, tri‑n‑pentyltin chloride, tetra‑n‑propyltin).
- Reagents and apparatus
- Specifies use of analytical‑grade solvents (methanol, ethanol, hexane, THF), tropolone, sodium acetate, NaB(Et)4, inert gas and GC‑MS instrumentation.
- Requires standard lab glassware, analytical balance (0.1 mg), ultrasonic bath, centrifuge, calibrated pH meter, micropipettes and mechanical shaker.
- Method workflow
- Preparation of standard and internal‑standard solutions, tropolone and buffer solutions.
- Sample extraction, derivatisation, blank/sample preparation, GC conditions and calibration.
- Expression of results, reporting requirements and method reliability (informative annexes).
- Safety note
- The standard warns about hazardous materials and requires appropriate safety and environmental controls.
Applications and users
- Routine and regulatory textile testing laboratories verifying compliance with chemical restrictions and safety standards.
- Manufacturers and quality control teams assessing raw materials, coatings, finishes or treated textiles for organotin residues.
- Regulatory authorities and product compliance bodies monitoring organotin content in consumer textiles and enforcing limits.
- Environmental and forensic labs performing speciation and trace determination of organotins in textile matrices.

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International

4 Principle
The organotin substances are extracted from the material of a textile product with a methanol-ethanol
mixture using tropolone as a complexing agent.
The polar and high-boiling organotin is then converted to the corresponding volatile alkyl derivative,
by reaction with sodium tetraethylborate, NaB(Et) . Finally, it is detected and quantified by using a gas
chromatograph fitted with a mass selective detector (GC-MS).
Table 1 indicates the list of target compounds which can be analysed with this document.
This document is also applicable for further organotin substances provided that the method is validated
with the additional compounds.
