Overview

prEN 17461:2026 is a draft European Standard developed by CEN for gymnastic equipment, specifically individual and multifunctional vaulting boxes. This document defines functional and safety requirements, as well as test methods, aiming to ensure high levels of user protection and equipment reliability across gymnastic and sports environments. It also provides additional safety criteria beyond those in the general standard EN 913, reflecting advances in equipment design and evolving needs for combined multifunctional use with accessories.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Definitions
The standard applies to both traditional and multifunctional vaulting boxes used individually or in combination. It introduces terms for multifunctional vaulting boxes, which are designed to work with various accessories and other gymnastic elements.

  • Classification and Dimensions
Vaulting boxes are classified by design, as detailed in standard annexes, ensuring a variety of shapes and sizes fit within prescribed ranges for safe and effective use.

  • Materials and Construction
The document highlights requirements for material selection and structural integrity, ensuring durability between maintenance checks and promoting environmentally responsible disposal and selection.

  • Safety Requirements
Enhanced safety provisions address stability, strength, entrapment risks, and durability. The product must minimize injury risks and be safe for all users, especially children and professional supervisors.

  • Test Methods
It outlines standardized procedures for testing stability, strength, and construction durability, using defined forces and specific apparatus in controlled environments.

  • Usage with Accessories
Additional requirements apply when using multifunctional vaulting boxes with accessories to ensure combined configurations remain safe and stable. All accessories must comply with EN 913.

Applications

  • Sports Halls and Gyms
This standard serves as a foundation for purchasing, maintaining, and safely using vaulting boxes in schools, gymnasiums, and sports clubs, where user diversity and safety expectations are high.

  • Product Design and Manufacturing
Manufacturers use prEN 17461 to develop compliant vaulting boxes and accessories, ensuring products can be marketed across the European Economic Area with confidence in their safety and functional performance.

  • Risk Assessment and Supervision
The standard guides facility operators in performing safety risk assessments, especially for combined uses and accessory integration, reducing the potential for injury and supporting compliant procurement.

  • Conformance with EU Legislation
The standard provides a route to presumed conformity with the General Product Safety Regulation (Regulation 2023/988/EU), making it essential for legal and regulatory compliance in Europe.

Related Standards

  • EN 913:2018+A1:2021 - General safety requirements and test methods for gymnastic equipment.
  • EN 12503-1 - Sports mats – Safety requirements for use with vaulting boxes.
  • EN 916:2003 - Previous standard for vaulting boxes, now superseded.
  • Other applicable European standards for environmental considerations and material selection.

Practical Value

By following the requirements in prEN 17461, stakeholders ensure that gymnastic vaulting boxes, whether used in classic or multifunctional arrangements, meet modern safety and performance expectations. Compliance drives:

  • Improved user safety for children and adults
  • Simpler supervision and clearer user instructions
  • Compatibility and stability in complex, combined gymnastic setups
  • Market access and legal compliance across the EU for manufacturers and suppliers

This standard is vital for anyone involved in the supply, installation, maintenance, or usage of gymnastic vaulting boxes in sports facilities.
