(Main)Fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors - Determination of the chloride content
General Information
- Abstract
This document specifies references to methods for the determination of the chloride content in organic fertilizers, organo-mineral fertilizers, inorganic fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors.
This document is applicable to fertilizing product blends where the blend is a mix of at least two of the following components: fertilizers, liming materials, soil improvers, growing media, inhibitors, plant biostimulants, and where the following category: fertilizers is the highest % in the blend by mass or volume, or in the case of liquid form by dry mass. If fertilizer is not the highest % in the blend, the European Standard for the highest % of the blend applies. In case a fertilizing product blend is composed only of inorganic products, the European Standard for inorganic fertilizers applies.
NOTE Variations in analytical methods for fertilizing product blends can lead to differing results as some components or matrix interactions can affect the outcome. Validation procedures have shown that developed standard methods are robust and reliable across diverse product compositions, but possible interferences and unexpected results when analysing fertilizing product blends are possible.

Overview
prEN 17756: Fertilizers, Liming Materials and Inhibitors - Determination of the Chloride Content is a draft European standard developed by CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 260. This standard specifies references to standardized methods for the determination of chloride content in a variety of fertilizing products, including organic, organo-mineral, and inorganic fertilizers, liming materials, and inhibitors. It is harmonized with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, ensuring the safety and quality requirements for fertilizing products marketed in the EU.
Understanding and accurately determining chloride content in fertilizing products is crucial for product quality, regulatory compliance, and agronomic performance. This standard provides a unified reference for industry stakeholders to ensure reliable chloride content measurements across diverse products and blends.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability:
- Applies to organic, organo-mineral, and inorganic fertilizers, liming materials, and inhibitors.
- Covers fertilizing product blends when fertilizers are the predominant component by mass or volume.
- Stipulates that if another component forms the largest portion of a blend, the relevant standard for that component applies.
Methods Referenced:
- Cites validated, robust analytical methods for chloride determination, including potentiometric titration and ion chromatography with conductivity detection.
- Highlights the importance of reliable sampling and sample preparation, as indicated in referenced EN 1482 standards.
Interference and Robustness:
- Notes that analytical variation can arise from complex blends or component interactions.
- Emphasizes that, despite validations, care must be taken as unexpected results are possible in certain blend matrices.
Regulatory Alignment:
- Meeting the standard’s requirements supports compliance with EU Regulation 2019/1009, affording presumption of conformity when cited in the Official Journal of the European Union.
Applications
Implementing prEN 17756 brings practical benefits to a range of stakeholders in the fertilizer and soil amendment industry:
Manufacturers
- Assures product quality by enabling precise, repeatable chloride content measurement.
- Facilitates regulatory compliance for products sold in the EU by aligning with mandated standards for labeling and quality assurance.
- Enables correct formulation and blending of products containing multiple components such as fertilizers, liming materials, inhibitors, or biostimulants.
Testing Laboratories
- Offers clear guidance on sampling, preparation, and the selection of analytical methods, ensuring accurate lab analyses.
- Provides a reference framework for inter-laboratory consistency and quality control.
Regulatory Authorities
- Aids in market surveillance and enforcement by setting a standardized reference for determining chloride content.
- Supports the harmonization of product testing across EU member countries.
Agronomists and End Users
- Ensures the safe and effective application of fertilizing products, preventing excessive chloride levels that could harm crops or soil.
Related Standards
To ensure the correct application of prEN 17756 and robust determination of chloride content, the following related European standards are referenced:
- EN 1482 (Parts 1-3): Fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors – Sampling and sample preparation
- EN 12944-1, -2, -3: Vocabulary for fertilizers and liming materials
- prEN 17758: Potentiometric titration method for chloride content determination
- prEN 18388: Ion chromatography method for chlorides in inhibitors
- EN 16195: Chloride determination in inorganic fertilizers (in the absence of organic material)
Together, these standards form a comprehensive system for assuring the quality, safety, and compliance of fertilizers and associated products within the European market.
