Abstract

This document specifies the design, materials, dimensions and marking requirements for cam locking couplings that serve as the link between hoses and connections to transport liquids, solids and gases, except liquid gas and steam.
For all sizes of aluminium cast material couplings and for all couplings of size DN 100, the pressure range is from −0,8 bar to 10 bar in the working temperature range from −20 °C to +65 °C. All other couplings according to this document are capable of operating within the pressure range from 0,8 bar1 to 16 bar in the working temperature range from −20 °C to +65 °C.

Overview

FprEN 14420-7: Hose fittings with clamp units – Part 7: Cam locking couplings is a European draft standard developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization). This standard outlines the design, materials, dimensions, and marking requirements for cam locking couplings used as hose fittings. Cam locking couplings, also known as camlock couplings, serve as essential links between hoses and fixed connections for conveying liquids, solids, and gases-excluding liquid gas and steam.

This standard aims to ensure compatibility, reliability, and safety across various types of cam locking couplings manufactured by different suppliers, supporting seamless integration throughout Europe’s fluid handling industries.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: The standard covers cam locking couplings for transporting liquids, solids, and gases under defined pressure and temperature ranges. Notably, it excludes liquid gas and steam applications.

  • Pressure and Temperature Ranges:

    • For all sizes of aluminium cast couplings and all DN 100 couplings: −0.8 bar to 10 bar, operating from −20 °C to +65 °C.
    • All other couplings: 0.8 bar to 16 bar, operating from −20 °C to +65 °C.
  • Design and Construction:

    • Specifies the harmonization of lever, adapter, and gasket dimensions to prevent leaks caused by twisting or vibration during operation.
    • Manual operation of cam arms without tools is required for ease of use and safety.
  • Materials:

    • Acceptable materials for coupler and adapter bodies include copper-zinc alloys, copper-tin alloys, specific grades of aluminium alloys, and stainless steels.
    • Gaskets are to be made from non-asbestos materials such as nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), fluoro rubber (FPM), chlorosulphonated polyethylene (CSM), or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
  • Dimensional and Marking Requirements:

    • Sets out specific dimensions for each coupling component to ensure interchangeability.
    • Markings must include reference to EN 14420-7, manufacturer’s identification, type and nominal size, pressure rating (for aluminium cast), and material number for stainless steel parts.
  • Quality Control:

    • References EN 14420-1 for type testing and quality control processes, ensuring that all couplings meet the same high standards of reliability and safety.

Applications

Cam locking couplings specified in FprEN 14420-7 are widely utilized in:

  • Industrial fluid transfer for petrochemicals, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and water treatment
  • Bulk transport and storage systems involving powders, grains, and liquids
  • Fire protection systems and emergency response apparatus where quick coupling and decoupling are required
  • Agricultural, construction, and municipal infrastructure where hoses need to be rapidly connected or changed

These couplings are chosen for their ease of use, ability to be connected without tools, and compatibility with a variety of fluids and hose materials, ensuring efficiency and safe operation in demanding environments.

Related Standards

FprEN 14420-7 is part of a broader series covering hose fittings with clamp units. Relevant companion standards include:

  • EN 14420-1: Requirements, types of fixing and connection, designation, and testing
  • EN 14420-2: Hose side parts of hose tail
  • EN 14420-3: Clamp units, bolted or pinned
  • EN 14420-4: Flange connections
  • EN 14420-5: Threaded connections
  • EN 14420-6: Tank truck couplings
  • EN 14420-8: Symmetrical half-coupling (Guillemin system)

Other referenced standards cover material properties (e.g., EN 10088-1 for stainless steels), connection threads (EN ISO 228-1 and EN 10226-1), and general tolerances (EN 22768-1).

By following FprEN 14420-7, industries ensure consistent, safe, and compatible cam locking couplings for a vast range of hose connection needs.

Introduction
Cam locking couplings are manufactured worldwide according to the American “military specification”
MIL-C-27487, which fixes the coupling side in a limited way, but not the connection side. Other parts like
levers, bolts, ring and gaskets are not standardized.

DN
nominal size
alphanumeric designation of size for components of a pipework system, which is used for reference
purposes, comprised of the letters DN followed by a dimensionless whole number which is indirectly
related to the physical size, in millimetres, of the bore or outside diameter of the end connections
Note 1 to entry: The number following the letters DN does not represent a measurable value and is not be used
for calculation purposes except where specified in the relevant standard.
Note 2 to entry: In those standards which use the DN designation system, any relationship between DN and
